  • Peaceful family-friendly site in Vilar de Mouros
  • 20 minutes' drive from popular surfing and windsurfing beaches
  • Well-equipped spa with gym, pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and massages
Feeling a touch frazzled? Tight shoulders and a buzzing brain both in need of a bit of unwinding? Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and head off to Prazer da Natureza Resort & Spa, a place of calm and rest in the little village of Vilar de Mouros. Unwinding may well start even with your first wander through the gorgeous gardens, but it’s the facilities here that can really help you to feel like a proper human again. Make a beeline for the spa to stretch the old muscles at the airy, light-filled gym – big picture windows look out onto the greenery to give you a fab view while you work out. Afterwards, swim in the heated waters of the indoor pool before lying back to relax in the Jacuzzi, sauna or Turkish bath (or all three – you’re on hols, so no rush). While you’re at the spa you may like to have a quick peruse of the treatment menu – a team of masseurs awaits ready to pummel you back into the right shape, and you can also sign up for halotherapy, a salt inhalation therapy that’s said to have positive effects on allergies, skin problems and arthritis. If you’re bewildered by the options, just have a chat with one of the friendly staff to find what’s best for you. Elsewhere around the site you can bash a few balls about at the tennis or squash courts or flop down on one of the loungers by the outdoor swimming pool to while away the day reading a book, taking dips in the saltwater pool, dozing or just taking the chance to do nothing. Kids, meanwhile, can meander over to the playground or the games room to expend a bit of youthful energy, or hook up to the free wifi to keep in touch with mates elsewhere. In keeping with the whole relaxing vibe, when it comes to eats you’ll be chuffed to hear that minimal effort is required, as you can merely bimble over to the on-site restaurant for your meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all offered here, with the main menu featuring heaps of fab local treats including fresh fish and traditional goat stews. There’s also a takeaway service should you prefer to retreat to your digs for some quality couch time. Celebrate being restored to your former glory by wandering over to the bar to select your tipple from the range of local wines or the gin menu. Settle down by the huge window to look out over the park or plonk down in front of the big screen to watch sports or other events. Either way, raise a glass to say ‘saúde’ to a fab holiday.

Local attractions

Should you choose to venture out from your place of zen, further activities await beyond the park gates. Perhaps start with a walk – there are lots of routes to choose from nearby, but a popular one is the 45-minute stroll to the Vilar de Mouros waterfalls, passing the village’s Roman bridge along the way. Near here there’s a little river beach where you can paddle or join canoe and kayak tours to explore the River Coura. More beach fun is at Praia do Moledo, around a 20-minute drive from the park. Strong wind and waves here make it a popular spot for windsurfing and surfing; if you’re a bit nervous about taking to the water, sign up for a surfing or paddleboarding lesson at a surf school in Vila Praia de Âncora, a little further down the coast and about half an hour from the site. From the beach in Praia do Moledo you can also hop on a boat tour to Ínsua Fortress, a 15th-century convent (and later defensive fort) on a rocky outcrop a short ride from the coast. Cross the river Minho and the border into Spain to visit more ace historical sites: the Santa Tecla Celtic Village and the Iron Age Castro de Santa Trega village are both around a half-hour drive from the park. Continue further north and around an hour from the park you’ll reach the town of Vigo, where you can wander round the Castro Fortress and its fab gardens, visit the fish market and relax on some of the gorgeous beaches. It’s also the jumping-off point for boat trips to the Islas Cíes to explore the archipelago’s beaut beaches, lakes and hiking trails.
