- Adults-only luxury campground on a homestead in central Portugal
- Abrantes 20 minutes’ drive; Coimbra one hour and 20 minutes
- Seasonal restaurant menu; yoga platform with valley views; massages
Olive groves, cork forests and the spectacular hilly landscapes of central Portugal are all around you at Fonte De Ferro, a blissfully peaceful (not least because it’s adults-only…) glamping site on an off-grid homestead a 15-minute drive from the town of Alferrarede.
And if you’re still not sure where that is, think of it as the easternmost corner of a diamond formed by Coimbra to the north (one hour and 20 minutes’ drive), Nazaré to the west (one hour and 25 minutes) and Lisbon to the south (one hour and 45 minutes). In other words, staying here allows you to cover a lot of Portugal within a couple of hours.
Owners Scott and Driss believe in sustainability – with an abundant twist of luxury: safari tents come with all modern comforts, from real beds (including all bedding, as well as beach and bath towels) to complimentary drinking water and eco-friendly toiletries, plus electricity. Toilets are of the composting kind – but in a pretty wooden hut spruced up by potted plants and other stylish decorative touches.
The food prepared by the restaurant relies heavily on the site’s organic garden and the seasonal supplies of local producers, and guests can take their meals in their own private space or in a covered communal area.
For the full relaxing experience, be sure to book a massage or a reflexology session, and feel free to practise your favourite asanas on the designated yoga platform while taking in far-reaching valley views.

Local attractions
On the banks of the Tagus, Abrantes (20 minutes’ drive) is dominated by the hilltop Castelo de Abrantes, a former Moorish fortress with a garden for shaded strolls (and a skatepark, if half-pipes are your thing). In the town centre, the MIAA - Museu Ibérico de Arqueologia e Arte de Abrantes houses a collection of artworks by Maria Lucília Moita.
A medieval castle with crenellated walls and towers overlooks Belver (20 minutes), while the Museu do Sabão in town displays a collection of soap bars and explores the science behind producing soap. Cross the Ponte de Belver bridge to reach the other bank of the Tagus and the Praia Fluvial do Alamal beach.
Coimbra was the original capital of Portugal. Its university is renowned for the 18th-century Biblioteca Joanina library, housed in an elegant Baroque building. The Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra is a top spot for a shaded stroll, or head to the riverfront Parque da Cidade Manuel Braga.
