West Netherlands holidaymakers: with cycling trails, beaches, dunes and valleys to choose from, it’s time to direct your attention to the island of Voorne-Putten. This wildlife haven’s a top spot for bike rides and peaceful strolls through flower-filled dune grasslands, over dunes, through swamps and alongside quiet dune lakes. And with the dog-friendly EuroParcs Poort van Zeeland as your base, you'll also have a fine space to relax in between such activities… Under nine kilometres along from the Voornes Duin nature reserve, you should soon be familiar with these sorts of landscapes. The sandy seaside resort of Rockanje – popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons – is 10 minutes’ drive away. Plus, 25 minutes’ walk away from the holiday park is the Quackstrand (25 minutes’ walk) for yet more dips and watersports on the Haringvliet. Fortified towns and the city of Rotterdam are all within 35 minutes’ drive of the site for a change of scenery. If that little lot hasn't worn the kids out yet, there’s a large indoor play area called the Adventuredome on site that should finish the task. On other days, pick up snacks from the on-site shop, then descend upon the bike hire services for wheels to tour the area with. That shop is also handy for bits to supply the kitchenette that's in each cottage, but there’s also a restaurant on site should you decide that it's someone else's turn to cook.

Local attractions

If your idea of time out includes plenty of time by the water, that’s very easily sorted around here. The lovely Quackjeswater (five minutes’ drive) is suitable for skating in the winter and peaceful strolls in the summertime. Still, with all that time by the sea, the dunes and the lakes under your belt, you might be craving some time in the city… If so, the city of Rotterdam (35 minutes) is a very wise bet – head over here to check out vintage ships, a 17th-century canal district, lively nightlife venues and museums. There's also the excellent Markthal for foodies to poke around in, and the Rotterdam Zoo, where kids can explore themed areas to see both land and sea creatures. Hand-in-hand with historic Rotterdam come the area’s historic fortified towns too. Hellevoetsluis (five minutes), based on the Haringvliet, has modern marinas, museums such as the National Fire Brigade Museum and historic defence sites. Its sister Brielle (15 minutes) is a seaside town with a historic lighthouse and the Historical Museum Den Briel all about the Eighty Years’ War.
