The moniker 'comfort' pitches certainly suits those at the coastal site of Aan Noordzee in the northern Netherlands: each and every pitch at this quiet and family-run site has its own private heated bathroom with shower, toilet and sink, as well as its own connections for electricity and digital telly. (And the grassy space for each is pretty roomy too.) Additional comfort in the site setting means you can ditch the car but still have lazy beach days, as it's only a 15-minute stroll from here to a peaceful sandy beach, reached along a path through the dunes. Plenty of quiet paths for walking and cycling through dunes and nature reserves are in the surrounding area. Aan Noordzee is in the North Holland seaside resort of Sint Maartenszee, in an area renowned as the sunniest in the Netherlands. A theme park based on Dutch tulips (and including the biggest concentration of bulb fields in the world) is a few kilometres away, and the many attractions of Amsterdam within 60. A play area and tennis courts are on site for guests' use. A bowling alley and indoor and outdoor pools are within 10 kilometres.

Local attractions

It's a peaceful potter of 15 minutes or a pedal of five minutes from the site through the dunes to the nearest beach, a clean, wide and sandy stretch popular with families. There's a wide network of cycle paths in the area, past ancient villages, Dutch polders and tulip-filled fields in spring: explore the Het Zwanenwater and Zildwijk nature reserves, take a five-kilometre ride to lively Callantsoog, or bike along the Hondsbossche seawall, to ride on a paved path right next to the sea. Within driving distance for families, animal park Van Blanckendaell (10 kilometres) also has a museum and a playground, and an aquarium is in Bergen Aan Zee (20 kilometres). Further afield on the island of Texel (30km), visit the Ecomare seal sanctuary to see its seals and rescued gannets. For some tiptop and traditional Dutch experiences, have days at the tulip theme park of Fluwels Tulpenland three kilometres away, head to the Friday morning cheese market in Alkmaar (25 kilometres) or whirl around the windmills of Zaanse Schans, 40 kilometres away.
