Want to know a secret? Well, there’s a place in North Holland where the beaches are long, clean and sandy – and yet somehow still not really very well known by tourists. It’s the area between Callantsoog and Den Helder, and it’s very easily accessed from Camping Oudesluis. ‘This is a place where the phrase “traffic jam” hasn’t really been invented yet’ say the owners of this place – and if that sounds really rather blissful then make your way to this small and friendly site two kilometres outside of the village of Oudesluis. From here you’ll be able to drive to the coast (where there’s plenty of parking) in about 10 minutes or bike over in about half an hour. Your surroundings are all green and rural here, so it’s a lovely place to chill out between beach trips. You’ll have free access to the village swimming pool (two kilometres away) and there’s a trampoline on site where the kids can bounce around and burn off some energy (cleverly, it’s within sight of the pitches so parents can keep an eye on proceedings while putting their feet up). This small site is all about relaxing in the open air, so it’s been kept on the simple side, favouring essential facilities over lots of noisy entertainment. A launderette, washing-up area and well-kept bathrooms are all on hand, along with a chemical disposal point and a wifi service. Barbecues are permitted, and there are shops and places to eat in Schagen (10 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

To the coast first? Good plan – the nearby stretch of the North Holland coast is a particularly fine one, with several options for beach days. Your closest beach is in Groote Keeten (10 minutes’ drive), where the dunes open out onto a long sandy beach that’s also one of the widest in the area – plenty of space for sunbathing, paddling, picnics and kite flying. A little further south, Callantsoog (15 minutes) is a popular pick too, with the beachcomber-inspired Juttersmuseum on hand for a bit of a break from the sands. Elsewhere along the coast there are hiking trails through the dunes, cycle routes, places to go horse riding and the chance to spot water birds at the Zwanenwater nature reserve (10 minutes). Away from the beach, there’s outdoor fun for the kids at Land van Fluwel Avonturenparadijs (15 minutes), the chance to get up into the trees at The Climb Valley (20 minutes) and a collection of animals to meet at Estate Hoenderdaell (10 minutes). Alkmaar (25 minutes) makes a great day out too, with its canals, Nationaal Biermuseum De Boom, Beatles Museum and Dutch Cheese Museum.
