  • Family-friendly holiday park at Egmond aan den Hoef in North Holland
  • 15 minutes’ bike ride to the beach at Egmond; 25 minutes to Akmaar
  • Boating lake, pool and games fields, plus a restaurant and snack bar
Once Egmond was a quiet fishing village on the North Holland coast, and today it’s one of the most popular seaside resorts in The Netherlands. The neighbouring hamlet of Egmond aan den Hoef is home to EuroParcs de Woudhoeve, a lakeside holiday park 10 minutes’ drive from the extensive sandy beach backed by rolling dunes. Everything at this family-friendly holiday park revolves around water. You can swim in the heated outdoor swimming pool, take a refreshing dip in the recreational lake or paddle around on the water in a canoe. On visiting the beach at Egmond, you can all splash around in the North Sea and then put your feet up in a seafront café along the coastline. There’s plenty of other activities to keep families entertained at EuroParcs de Woudhoeve too; a playground for toddlers, a pétanque court, volleyball court and football field for games with new-found friends. You can also hire bikes to get out into the surrounding countryside – cycling is fairly flat, making the area ideal for family jaunts. No need to worry about keeping everybody fed and watered either, as breakfast bread and pastries are delivered daily (just order at reception the day before) and you can keep hunger at bay with fries and pizza from the snack bar during the day. For more substantial fare, tuck into satay or veggie burgers at Kosteluk restaurant, where board games like Ludo and Scrabble keep the kids occupied.

Local attractions

Every season has its charm at EuroParcs De Woudhoeve: enjoy bracing beach walks in winter, art markets and fun fairs in the summer months. And if you visit in spring, you can take guided tours of colourful bulb fields. And whenever you come to Egmond, the fabulous art museums, shops and restaurants of Amsterdam (45 minutes’ drive) make a great day out. If you’d rather stay closer to home base, hire bikes from the park and head to Egmond aan Zee (15 minutes’ cycle) to visit Abbey Egmond, the oldest monastery in The Netherlands, with candles and foods made by the monks for sale in the shop, or climb to the top of the 19th-century J C J van Speijk Lighthouse for views over the North Sea. Fans of World War II history can also visit a small underground museum at Bunkermuseum Jansje Schong to see military uniforms and weapons. It’s 25 minutes’ cycling to Alkmaar and its famous cheese market (open April to September on Friday morning), still run as it was when it opened in 1365. There’s masses more to do in this pretty town though, from taking a walking tour of the canals to seeing the stained-glass windows in the stately Grote Kerk, and visiting museums featuring cheese, beer and (rather oddly) The Beatles.
