It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful farm site five minutes' drive from Oldehove
- A 20-minute drive from Groningen and 25 from the coast
- Play barn, go-karts, trampoline, summer pool and barbecue evenings
Hankering after hols in a peaceful part of the world? Herd up the troops and head off to Hayema Heerd, a farm site in the gorgeous Groningen countryside, 20 minutes' drive from the city centre and a five-minute jaunt from the little town of Oldehove.
Here’s a place with a whole swathe of space to chill out: one and a half hectares of it, in fact, with fields all around to add even more rural views to the mix. Bike rides (natch), walks and canoe trips are all fine ways to see a bit more of the fab surrounds, or the folk on site can sort you out with a sailing safari in search of Highland cattle, wild horses and all manner of birdlife.
Sticking around on site? Set the tiddlers free and they’ll no doubt find plenty to entertain themselves with, bouncing on the trampoline, playing in the sandpit, gadding about on go-karts, catching frogs in the stream… In sunny times the farm folk build a pool out of hay bales (of course – what else on a farm?); when the weather's looking a bit the other way, you can retreat to the play barn for table tennis, board games and air hockey.
A barbecue is a must on such a hol, but this is something else: sign up for a barbecue evening on site for next-level outdoor cooking, including steam cooking and smoking skills. For a more low-key dinner, hire a firepit or head to one of the kitchen cabins.

Local attractions
Head out on bikes, on foot or in canoes and you may well spot quite a bit of the local wildlife (spoonbills, peregrine falcons and flamingos are among the birds that may put in an appearance). If you want a bit more animal action, make for the micro world of the DoeweZoo insect zoo (15 minutes’ drive), the seal rehab centre in Pieterburen (20 minutes) or the marine creatures of AquaZoo Friesland (40 minutes).
For a blast of sea air, it’ll take you around 25 minutes to drive to the North Sea coast for walks and bike rides along the trails of the Lauwersmeer National Park or boat trips to the secluded island of Schiermonnikoog from Lauwersoog. If you’re interested in the area’s fishy past, stop by at the fishing museum in Zoutkamp (15 minutes); an eel smokery on site makes it a fine lunch stop too.
Time for an urban outing? Get down to Groningen (20 minutes) for canalside strolls, vintage shops, café culture, traditional Dutch houses and moseying around museums.
