It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site on the slopes of the Holterberg
- A 25-minute drive from Deventer and 75 minutes from Amsterdam
- Three heated pools, restaurant, alpacas, indoor play and bike rental
Outdoorsy type? Get along to Camping de Holterberg 10 minutes’ drive from Rijssen in Overijssel: this family-friendly site is a top spot for active stays.
On the southern slope of the Holterberg hill, and just inside Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, there’s plenty to do hereabouts. The 492-kilometre long-distance Pieterpad passes 15 minutes’ walk from the site (and crosses the Holterberg from there), and there are lots of cycling and mountain biking routes in the area – this is the Netherlands after all – with bikes for rent at reception.
If somewhat lazier days are called for, it’s easy to stay busy by staying put too: the pool complex should keep everyone from the youngest family members to the biggest grownups splashing about. There are also playgrounds and air trampolines for the kids, and exercise machines by the pool for those who don’t want to let themselves go over the hols.
When down time is required, mum and dad can chill on the restaurant terrace, which handily overlooks swimming spots and playgrounds, or claim a sun lounger next to the pool and make the most of the Dutch sun. Families can reunite after some time alone with a trip to the site’s animal shelter, where alpacas, goats, ducks and chickens are waiting to be fed.

Local attractions
Start hols by getting adrenaline spiking at one of the two theme parks within 25 minutes’ drive of the site: younger families will find Waarbeek a better fit, with kid-friendly rides, and more grownup kids (and their parents) should have a thrilling time on Hellendoorn’s ‘coasters and waterpark slides.
Feel like spending a day or two mooching around some fab Dutch cities? It’s 25 minutes from base to Deventer, where there are museums, parks, stunning churches and lots of shopping options, and capital city Amsterdam is an hour and 15 minutes away for the world-famous Rijksmuseum, canal network and floating flower market (as well as museums, galleries, restaurants and cafés aplenty).
For slower paced days, clamber into the car for a jaunt to the top of Holterberg hill (a five-minute drive), where there are restaurants, a nature museum, miniature golf and stunning views over the area. Otherwise, spend them traipsing around De Wiersse gardens or the public gardens at Warmelo castle, Weldam castle, Twickel castle and (with a manor house and museum attached) Kasteel het Nijenhuis, all within half an hour.
