- Sustainable dog-friendly site a five-minute drive from Eibergen
- Enschede and Attractiepark de Waarbeek 25 minutes’ drive
- On-site brewery, restaurant and art studio; local honey for sale
What are your camping musts? Perhaps you’re looking for a spot where you can leave the kids to manage their own time as they make new friends on a pétanque court or by a fishing pond. Or maybe you want a place where your canine buddy will feel like a welcome guest. Or, if you’re all about life on two wheels, you might be after a splendid network of cycle paths. If those are your non-negotiable criteria, then Camping Ont Moeten (which translates as Camping Must) might just be the place for you.
This site in the eastern Netherlands region of Achterhoek, close to the German border (less than six kilometres away), and it's surrounded by small areas of woodland and expansive fields with grazing cows. It’s a peaceful setting that feels somewhat remote, but in fact shops, restaurants and other urban amenities are only a five-minute drive away, in the town of Eibergen (also easily reached by bike in about 10 minutes).
Guests have access to a clean (and heated – always welcome news) bathroom block and a communal fridge freezer. The site itself is run in a sustainable way, with multiple recycling points, solar panels for electricity and resident bees making tasty honey. Fancy some for breakfast? You can buy a pot in the reception area, where you can also book a tour of the on-site brewery or a drawing workshop at the art studio, and obtain information on local events and activities. The site also has a restaurant serving dishes prepared with vegetables grown right here.

Local attractions
In the countryside around Eibergen (five minutes’ drive) is Mallumse Molen, an 18th-century corn mill sitting on a placid stream off the river Berkeltat. Nearby, the Kruidenhof te Mallum is a botanical garden with ponds and bug hotels, while the Hof van Eckberge zoo has alpacas and miniature pigs, plus a reptile house.
Enschede (25 minutes) has cobbled streets and leafy squares lined with terrace cafés. The collection at Rijksmuseum Twenthe includes paintings by medieval Dutch masters and contemporary artworks. If the kids are getting antsy, a trip to Attractiepark de Waarbeek theme park, with thrill rides and a Ferris wheel, ought to keep them busy for a while.
Cross over into Germany for Gronau’s rock'n'popmuseum (half an hour), where you can explore the world of modern music and its various genres through a series of interactive displays and artists’ memorabilia, from Bob Dylan’s harmonica to an electric guitar signed by the members of AC/DC.
