Get in, dump bags, start the important business of relaxing straight away… sound OK? That’s pretty much the procedure for guests of Tent-OK at Camping Den Blanken, in the Gelderland countryside about five minutes’ drive from Neede. Yes indeed – no messing with tent construction here, as they’re already set up ready to welcome guests (mainly families with kids under 11, and older travellers). Beds and mattresses are provided, so all you need do is plonk down your pillow and unroll your sleeping bag (both of which you'll need to bring, as linen can't be rented on site). Cooking is done outside, but you’ll find essentials in the tent (like pots, pans and dishes) to rustle up hot drinks and breakfasts, as well as a seating area outside to tuck into your grub. So… what first? Perhaps a stroll to the heated outdoor pool and paddling pool, accompanying the kids for a run about at the playground or getting active at the sports field, pétanque court or tennis court (where you can rent rackets to bring the packing list down even further). If immediate needs involve eats and drinks, scoot over to the restaurant to settle indoors or out on the terrace for lunch, dinner or a decent cup of coffee. You can also grab a snack from the snack bar and order food to take away if you’re keen to get going. As well you may be, as this is a handy spot if you plan on hiking and cycling around Achterhoek, with plenty of routes to follow through forests, along rivers, by castles and around pretty villages. There are also a couple of top fishing spots nearby, including the Schipbeek tributary and Berkel river.

Local attractions

Want to start by stretching your legs? There are lots of trails to tramp in Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park (half an hour’s drive), or you may like to take the kids to the two-kilometre adventure trail at Erve Brooks (10 minutes). Take in the surrounds from up in the air instead if you like – the treetop courses at Klimbos Achterhoek (20 minutes) are the place for that. Give your wanders a historic edge with trips to the castle and gardens at Kasteel Warmelo (five minutes) or Kasteel Ruurlo (20 minutes), or up the energy levels for a kid-friendly day at Attractiepark de Waarbeek (25 minutes). Alternatively, save your outings for after dark so you can use the telescopes at Phoenix Sterrenwacht’s observation deck (20 minutes) to look closely at the night sky. In a position for kid-free days out? Learn all about lager at one of the country’s top breweries with a tour of the Grolsch factory (20 minutes).
