It’s time to settle one of life’s most pressing questions – which is the best kind of sauna: Finnish or Lithuanian? No opinion on such matters? You may well have after a stay at Holiday Centre Slenis, which has both for you to try out while you’re here. Different guests will come to different conclusions, no doubt, but one thing that can be agreed upon among all comers here is that this is one excellently located site for travels in Lithuania. Trakai and its famed castle are 10 minutes’ drive away, and a mere half-hour jaunt can get you to the country’s compact capital, Vilnius (with trains available from Trakai if you don’t fancy the drive). Museums, historic sites and a sculpture park are all within easy reach too, and Kaunas is about an hour’s drive away. In between such outings, this is a fine place to chill out – once part of a historic manor estate, the peaceful site is on a scenic peninsula by Lake Galvė. It has a private beach with views of Trakai Castle across the lake. There are plenty of sun loungers for hours of sand-based loafing, plus small boats and pedalos. Further activity can be had at the basketball, volleyball and football pitches, and there’s a play area and a stack of board games on hand to keep the kids entertained. Easy eats can be acquired at the snack bar on site, and facilities for self-catering include a barbecue area, picnic tables and a small kitchen with a fridge. Dogs are very welcome at Holiday Centre Slenis, by the way, so you need not think about leaving your good furry friend behind.

Lovely spot by the lake, with beach access and cycling paths. Staff are grand and pitches are big. But the toilets are a bit old and not great – doors don't lock, no loo roll, and not the cleanest. Some found it noisy and there were midges. A storm in July 2024 meant no water or electric, yet folk still paid full whack and had to navigate debris.

Liked Lovely green pitches. With picturesque layout. Excellent sandy beach with good clean water to swim quite a distance into the lake. Decent restaurant with a pleasant terrace overlooking the water

Disliked The only real downside were the very dated washing and toilet facilities. Adequate number. Free to use and decent hot water. However, they were a bit of a challenge without a section of the quite short shower cubicle to change in/keep clothes dry. My last shower I had water dripping on me through the ceiling as I showered and black mould on a section of the ceiling

Liked Lovely location with easy beach access and good cycle route into Trakai. Staff lovely with good English but clear they have not been trained properly.

Disliked Dirty, old and unloved amenities. We were charged double the rate jyst because we booked through this app for the 1st night. Rip off for so poor. There is wifi but it is poor and keeps dropping out.

Disliked Sanitär veraltet, über Stunden kein Toilettenpapier, Türen der Toiletten und Duschen halten nicht zu und wenn sie zu halten würden kann man sie nicht abschließen.

Liked A very good site in a pleasant rural setting with in easy reach of Kaunas. The price was very affordable and the staff of the check-in desk helpful. There are also many features to enjoy at this lakeside campsite. Indeed, we decided to stay an extra night.

Disliked The facilities are beginning to look very old now, many requiring replacement and the bathroom block had many lights that were not working.

Liked A very nice place on a beautiful spot beside the lake. Fast train to Vilnus and Trakai castle easily reachable by bike.
Friendly staff

Disliked Only a few electrical switches worked - no warning about the problem at the reception. The toilets and showers are very old and not spotlessly clean. The kitchen was really dirty - some people left dirty dishes beside the sink, and these dishes remained there throughout our stay (3 nights...).
Hundreds of mosquitoes.

Liked Nice reception staff , quiet, can park where you want, spacious pitches.

Disliked Facilities rundown old and dated.
Only really suitable site if you want peace and quiet.
Lots of mosquitos bites
We had dogs but nowhere to walk them.

Liked Really cool place with campsite in the valley. Uphill there was a great restaurant with really tasty food and kind waitresses. Near lake two small beaches with sand and very clear water. At the campsite there was also common kitchen with fridge

Disliked Common bathroom are a little bit old. In some cabins there were no light or only cold water. Renew is necessary.

Local attractions

Start local explores by following the nearby cycle path into Trakai or taking the 10-minute drive there. It's a fab little town that’s not so much by the lake as in the middle of it, thanks to its location on a two-kilometre peninsula. There are boat tours to take here and museums and Orthodox churches to poke around, but the highlight is the fairytale-like Gothic castle set on an island and packed with historic exhibits (ancient weaponry, chain mail and the like). Keeping it local, it’s also worth taking the 15-minute walk to the Hill of Angels, a sculpture park full of folk-style wood carvings. Hop in the car instead and a half-hour drive will get you to the Kernave archaeological site or the huge Rumšiškės Open-Air Museum, where you can learn all about the area’s history and rural lifestyle. As it’s a mere half-hour drive away, it’s worth putting Vilnius on the schedule too, for wanders through its baroque Old Town, cathedral and museums and a climb up to the Tower of Gediminas.
