  • No-frills family-friendly camping five minutes’ drive from Troškūnai
  • Jewish Cemetery 10 minutes’ walk; Vilnius about an hour’s drive
  • Off-grid wildlife haven with a fishing pond; supermarkets in Troškūnai
Keen to escape the rat race for a couple of days? Pack fishing rods, walking shoes and perhaps a bike and get on your way to Anos Kempingas, a nearly wild campsite five minutes’ drive from the historic town of Troškūnai in Utena County. Once installed on this peaceful camping field, you can head for the fishing pond (and maybe catch something to grill on the barbecue for supper), hike through thick pine forest and cycle quiet country lanes to your heart’s content. Managed by a local family, the campsite is something of a wildlife haven, with deer often seen flitting between the trees. As it’s a back-to-basics site with a portable toilet being the only facility, please make sure to bring in a supply of drinking water and food, plus torches for wandering around after dark. Should you forget anything vital, Troškūnai is actually only 25 minutes’ walk away across the fields, so you can stock up in the supermarkets (and grab a crafty beer in one of the pubs while you’re there).

Local attractions

Handsome Troškūnai (five minutes’ drive/25 minutes’ walk) may be your first port of call for a spot of sightseeing; the old centre of the town is home to a Benedictine monastery as well as a clutch of gleaming-white Baroque churches. If you’re keen to have a day touring the sights of Vilnius (about an hour), services run regularly from the town’s bus station. You may need to cherry-pick to see the best of Vilnius on a day; major attractions include the colonnaded cathedral and the landmark Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Be sure not to miss the haunting Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights, formerly a prison run by the KGB during Communist occupation, and wind up your day at the top of Gediminas Tower for spectacular views over the city. If you’re sticking closer to your peaceful rural base, there’s a long-forgotten and atmospheric 19th-century Jewish Cemetery in Smėlynė (10 minutes’ walk), where you can wander freely through woodland to read the inscriptions on the tumbledown tombstones.
