  • Smart and well-maintained beach resort with bar and kids' club
  • An hour's drive from Venice and Padua; an hour and a half from Ravenna
  • Private beach and large swimming pool; evening entertainments
Adriatic adventurers and Venetian voyagers will have a carnival of a time on this stylish well-equipped beach resort in Chioggia. An attractive fishing town of coloured houses crisscrossed with canals, Chioggia is often called 'the other Venice': you'll be able to test the comparison here, as the real Venice is an hour's drive away. Get your kicks in the city, then, like the grand doges of old, retreat to the beach... Camping Tredue has its own private stretch of golden sand facing the Adriatic and a pool for hours of watery antics right on site. The other facilities here make family hols a doddle too, with parent and child washrooms and a laundry looking after the practical side; on the more frivolous (and they take their frivolity seriously in the Veneto) there's a playground, daily kids' club activities in the summer months and a bar with family entertainments laid on. Those itching to get active can hire bikes on the site and cycle the excellent circuit around the Lusenzo lagoon; if the wind's in your face then turn round and try windsurfing; watersports are on offer all up the coast. And then? Be sure and take a stroll of Chioggia in the evening cool and sample the seafood.

Local attractions

A day out (or several) in Venice is supremely doable from here, an hour by car or boat. Take the vaporetto (boat meets bus) up the Grand Canal, sip an (expensive) espresso in slowly-sinking St Mark's Square and peruse a palatial palazzo or two. Boat trips to Pellestrina island make a pleasant way to cool off and get present-buying; Murano is famed for glass and Burano for its fine lace. After the merchants of Venice, try the city of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet: Verona (an hour and 40 minutes' drive) is smaller than Venice and easier to get round for obvious reasons. This UNESCO World Heritage Site city has stacks to see and do: you could channel your artistic side by attending an opera at the ancient amphitheatre of the Arena; amble around the many other Roman highlights of the city including the Ponte di Pietra or the Gavi arch, or be a bit more modern with a look at Verona's medieval architecture. Cycling types should look out for the local leg of the Giro d'Italia if they're in town in May or June. Don't forget your wild side while here either: the national park of the Po delta half an hour away is a cracking wetland wilderness of pines and orchids studded with water lilies; watch carefully and you could see a glossy ibis catching an eel or a deer foraging in the reeds.
