Florence is about 100km away and well worth a dawn start for a day trip to see its fab sights and attractions. You won't get round it in one day, but make a point of seeing the cathedral and bell tower, the Accademia gallery and the Uffizi gallery with paintings by arty sorts like by Da Vinci and Botticelli. A bit further afield is Siena (160km), a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Palio di Siena horse races and another Old Town.
