  • Peaceful Tuscany site in the woods around Palazzuolo sul Senio
  • Foreste Casentinesi 45 minutes’ drive; Mugello Circuit 75 minutes
  • Stream, waterfall and a water spring; food shop and communal barbecue
Dreaming of running off to the Tuscan hills? Make that dream into a reality at Le Sorgenti Camping Relax on the northern edge of Palazzuolo sul Senio village, close to the border with the Emilia-Romagna region. As the name suggests, this is a lovely place to relax – pretty pitches (all with electricity) occupy a terraced landscape planted with shade-giving chestnut trees. A stream winds its way through the site, with a waterfall and a sulphur spring along the way; guests are welcome to help themselves to the mineral-rich waters and to swim in the natural pools. In the evening, grab what you need from the food shop on site and gather with the other guests around the communal barbecue – a great spot to chat and pick up tips on the best hiking trails in the area (or mountain-biking routes, if that’s your jam). If you prefer to have your meals cooked for you when you’re on holiday, it will take you about 15 minutes to walk to the village centre for restaurants serving up traditional Tuscan dishes. Palazzuolo sul Senio also has facilities like tennis courts, miniature golf, a pump track and an outdoor swimming pool – in other words, more than enough to keep the kids happy (for a few hours, at least). There’s a small pool on site, too, along with table tennis. In terms of amenities, the site comes with hot showers, a toilet block (with facilities for disabled guests, too), a washing-up area and a launderette.

Local attractions

Fancy a stroll with some rural scenery? Perhaps you’d like to climb to the Valico del Paretaio viewpoint (10 minutes’ drive) or seek out trails in the Foreste Casentinesi National Park (45 minutes). There’s plenty to see after sunset too, as this is an area of dark skies – best viewed by attending one of the public open evenings at Astronomical Observatory of Monteromano (40 minutes). Of course this is an area of quite some history, too, which you can dip into with visits to Chiesa di Lozzole (15 minutes) or Ca' Di Malanca history museum (55 minutes). If you don’t mind a longer journey, you can also plan day trips to the likes of Bologna (an hour and 20 minutes) and Florence (an hour and a half). If you'd like to up the pace considerably, see if there’s something going on at the Mugello Circuit (an hour and 15 minutes) – cars and motorbikes both race here, with races and practice sessions available to book.
