  • Well-equipped safari tents on a Tuscany site just outside Bucine
  • Florence, Siena, Arezzo and Lake Trasimeno all within an hour's drive
  • Three swimming pools, two tennis courts, restaurant and kids' club
Perhaps you’re itching to get out and explore Tuscany, or perhaps you’re just ready to settle down by one of the pools on site (there are three to try out, after all). Whatever you’ve got planned, the one thing you won’t need to factor in at Villatent at Camping La Chiocciola is time to construct a tent – the safari tents here are all set up and ready to go. Also on hand at this family-friendly site are plenty of activities to keep everyone amused at all hours: along with those three pools (one of which is a special kids’ pool) are two tennis courts, a volleyball court and a small playground. Come along in high season and you can add into the mix kids’ activities (suitable for ages four to 12, and held in Dutch) including crafts, games and sporting endeavours. This is possibly the time for parents to slope off for a bit of quiet time on the sunbeds by the pool… Beyond all that, of course, you’ve got the whole of Tuscany to explore. This site is five minutes’ drive from the little town of Bucine, with the hills and vineyards of Chianti all around to explore. Florence, Siena and Montepulciano are all within an hour’s drive so you can tick off lots of Tuscany’s top sights pretty easily too. If you don’t fancy cooking upon return to site, pick up quick eats from the snack bar or take a table at the atmospheric restaurant for pizzas, pastas and Tuscan cuisine. (There’s also a bar if all you need is a cool drink to complete your day.)

Local attractions

Chianti is, of course, mainly known (quite rightly) for its spectacular scenery and its equally excellent wines, so it’s worth planning some time exploring both. There are several wineries within a half-hour drive of the site, and plenty of places to get out for walks or bike rides to see the views around the place too. Trading rural views for cityscapes is a fine idea too – Arezzo (half an hour’s drive), Siena (40 minutes) and Florence (55 minutes) are all well worth a visit for their historic sights, art collections, shops and restaurants filled with fine food. If they seem a bit big, try the smaller wine-producing town Montepulciano (50 minutes) instead. A further change of scenery can be had by leaving Tuscany behind and heading for the shores of Lake Trasimeno (50 minutes). Park up in pretty Passignano and take a boat tour across the lake to see some of the highlights of this handsome aquatic area.
