Looking towards Puglia in search of the cliff-carved coastline and white-sand beaches? Then drop your anchor at Oasi del Camperista in Otranto, as this site is 800 metres from the Torre Sant’Andrea bay. Despite being just off the coastal road, this site is a little burrow of wildlife with pitches surrounded by a pine forest. Still, the pleasures of the sea and the coast's many coves, inlets and sandy beaches are hard to forget, as there are 15 beaches in this region. The closest is 10 minutes’ walk away and Torre dell’Orso is half an hour’s walk away. You may need some essentials in your luggage… towels for the beaches perhaps, and sturdy shoes to explore the nearby archaeological sites. And if your dog fits too, you’ll be able to bring them along, as this site is dog-friendly as well as family-friendly. The site is quite small, so facilities are of the simple variety that cover the essentials, including an amenities block with toilets and showers. You’ll likely want to eat out – and that's easily done from here, as there are plenty of restaurants, shops, cafés and bars a short walk away from the site, including some really sweet spots down by the sea if you’ve got your mind set on a sunset cocktail or two.

Local attractions

It’s likely you’ve come along here for the coast, so first ports of call should certainly be along the shoreline, starting with the scenic beach at Torre Sant’Andrea – the intriguing rock formations are 10 minutes’ walk away. The gorgeous waters, beach bar and lounge area of I Caraibi del Salento are five minutes’ drive away, or you might like to take the 15-minute drive to Baia dei Turchi for a more remote sandy stretch. It’s not quite all about the sea, though – mix up your watery views with a trip to the clifftop pool Grotta della Poesia (five minutes’ drive) or an outing to the peaceful Alimini Lakes (15 minutes) for picnics or canoeing. There’s a lot of historical interest around here too if you’d like to throw in something quite different: check out the prehistoric carvings at the Archaeological Area of Roca Vecchia (five minutes) or explore Castle Acaya (half an hour), surrounded by a walled village. Meanwhile, Riserva Naturale Le Cesine (25 minutes) is the place to go for a bit of wildlife spotting.
