Reception building, and entrance to communal kitchen and toilet block

  • Grass pitches on a family-run chestnut farm in the Piedmontese hills
  • Cuneo 50 minutes’ drive; Albissola Marina an hour
  • Playground; communal kitchen; breakfast and dinner on request
Halfway up a forested hill, in Piedmont’s lush countryside, Agricampeggio La Botalla is a peaceful spot on a family-run farm that harvests organic chestnuts. (On that note, it would be churlish not to purchase some of the farm’s home-made chestnut flour and delicious chestnut cream.) The set-up at this site (about 50 minutes’ drive from Cuneo) is laidback and relaxed: there are no pre-defined pitches, but just one big grassy lawn. Guests can rock up and choose what they deem to be the most appropriate spot to their needs – in the sun or in the shade, near the playground or close to the main building, with easy access to the communal amenity block (with hot showers). The main building also houses the communal kitchen, which is equipped with appliances, pans, utensils, crockery and most anything else you might need to prepare your family meals. On request, the owners will prepare breakfast and dinner for you, or you can head into the nearby village of Mombasiglio (five minutes’ drive along the SP34 road), which has a small grocery shop and a pizzeria, or drive to Ceva (15 minutes). Every spot has an electric hook-up point, and if you don’t have a tent of your own, you can rent one on site, alongside a mattress, sleeping bag and towels. Parking (in a designated area a short walk from the pitches, so as not to be disturbed by engine noises and fumes) is included.

Local attractions

At the top of a wooded hill overlooking the town of Ceva (15 minutes’ drive) are the ruins of a 16th-century fort (destroyed by Napoleon’s army in 1801). After admiring the views of the surrounding valley from the battlements, head to the lavender fields of Sale San Giovanni (a further 10 minutes’ drive due east). The Sanctuary of the Nativity of Mary (20 minutes) in Vicoforte is a monumental complex built over a couple of centuries (hence its eclectic architecture, from baroque to neoclassic). Its elliptical cupola, frescoed with scenes from the life of the Virgin and the prophets, is the world’s largest. In Albissola Marina (an hour), the Jorn House Museum is the former residence of a 20th-century Danish artist who embellished it with ceramic mosaics, sculptures and gargoyles. There are spectacular views of the Ligurian Sea from the lush gardens.
