Pitches among the trees

  • Peaceful site right on the shores of Lake Bracciano
  • 50-minute train journeys to Rome two kilometres away in Bracciano
  • Swimming, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing in the engine-free lake
All roads lead to Rome… but some lead more speedily than others. Such is the splendid state of affairs at Camping Azzurro, a simple 50-minute train journey from one of the most tiptop cities in the world. Even more niftily, a bus stops right at the entrance for journeys to the local station two kilometres away in Bracciano; from there, trains to Rome depart every half hour. And even more niftily than that? The Camping Azzurro owners can sort you out with your train ticket before you step foot off site. And more splendid scenes await without even leaving the grounds, as Camping Azzurro lies right on the shores of Lake Bracciano among century-old olive trees in Bracciano-Martignano Regional Nature Park. The lake is in a protected basin where motorboats and other engine craft have been banned for decades: as you might reckon, this means peaceful stays and sparkingly clean and clear water for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. There are spectacular scenes of the lake from all around the site, whether you're at the leisurely parts (five-a-side football field, volleyball court, ping pong tables and bowls pitch), or fuelling up at the excellent eatery options: a restaurant, pizzeria, bar and mini market are all to hand. Among the amenities are a modern sanitary block and a laundry room with washing machine, iron and ironing board – you'll need to look your most crisp and uncrumpled when you're off to mighty Rome...

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great location next to Bracciano - walkable but uphill so the camping bus was a good option. Easy to catch the train into Rome and cheap, excellent rail service into the city. Local town is pretty with lots of nice eateries. The Lake is beautiful - take water shoes though - and was a great place to cool off. Pitches were large and shaded. Facilities good and always clean. Receptionists really lovely. Free WiFi throughout the camp.

Disliked: Had to pay for the shower €0.50 for about 3 minutes so had to be quick!

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Gute Sanitäranlagen, schöner offener Platz, schöner See.

Local attractions

You can bus your merry way around this lush countryside with ease: as well as services to Rome, the Bracciano station is also a starting point for archaeological sites such as Cerveteri, 20 kilometres from the site. Famed for its Etruscan necropolis complex, it's home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the necropolis in Tarquinia) of the Necropoli della Banditaccia, covering 400 hectares to make up the biggest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean. If you'd rather get around by boat (this is a spectacular spot for it), take the summer tourist craft from Bracciano's beach area for a full tour of the lake. You could also stop off at Trevignano Romano on the north side of the lake (10 minutes' drive), for Bracciano's main sailing centre. A 20-minute drive south then east will land you at Lake Martignano, part of the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Nature Park: a top spot for more boating as well as for birdwatching and lakeside strolls.
