  • Peaceful site at a small 19th-century castle with ancient walls
  • A five-minute drive or 10-minute cycle from Cividale del Friuli
  • Dog-friendly; outdoor terraces, a vegetable garden and valley views
When it comes to views, there's no doubt that Camp Hill Valley has a pretty spectacular one. Set in the grounds of a small 19th-century castle and surrounded by ancient walls, the dog-friendly site looks down and over a large, green valley. Through that lush valley, and within a 10-minute cycle or a pleasant 40-minute walk of the site, is Cividale del Friuli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a historic town centre on the banks of the river Natisone. First things first, take in the valley views from the spacious terraces and hilltop patio that have been very kindly furnished with tables and chairs by the Camp Hill Valley team. Secondly, take scope of the stunning grounds, which are surrounded by ancient walls dating back to the early 16th century, and the modern amenities such as drinking water and a toilet block. The peaceful, hilltop site also has large, green spaces and a lush vegetable garden that produces seasonal produce for guests to try. Once you’re all settled in and ready to turn your attention to the surrounding Friuli Venezia Giulia landscapes, there are lots of ways to get stuck in, whether it’s hiking, cycling or visiting caves or local wineries for tastings. Whether you cycle, walk or take the five-minute drive to Cividale del Friuli doesn’t matter, just as long as you leave plenty of time to see the medieval centre, where there are plenty of restaurants, shops, bars and cafés and sights like the 15th-century Devil’s Bridge and Venetian-Gothic cathedral.

Local attractions

With so many pretty pieces of scenery surrounding Camp Hill Valley, it should be no wonder that a popular activity for those visiting this area is a hot air balloon ride from the local airstrip (15 minutes' drive). They run twice-monthly, so ask the site for the exact dates to, at the very least, witness the take-off. Not too keen on heights? You might want to substitute the former activity with a quad biking tour suitable for families and beginners run by the activity centre in Buttrio (20 minutes). There are lots of ways to maximise your time outdoors in this region by signing up elsewhere for rafting, canoeing and packrafting on the Tagliamento or Soča Rivers in spring and summer. Canyoning is also an option in the emerald-green waters of the Arzino Valley (around an hour). The site is not too far from the border with Slovenia, which is handy if you’ve always wanted to see Napoleon’s Bridge in Kobarid (35 minutes) or the mountain town of Bovec (55 minutes). Turn your attention south for beach days; the Adriatic resorts of Grado, Lignano Sabbiadoro and Bibione can all be reached within an hour and 10 minutes’ drive.
