- Quiet touring site on an organic farm 10 minutes’ drive from Matera
- The Crypt of Original Sin and Lago di San Giuliano 10 minutes’ drive
- Regional dishes in the restaurant; Basilicata guided tours available
Tucked under centuries-old olive trees on an organic farm that also grows the local speciality cardoncelli mushrooms, Via del Sud is a Basilicata touring site that puts you within 10 minutes’ drive of ancient Matera and its mysterious ‘sassi’ cave dwellings.
Helpful facilities at this small-scale motorhome park include jumbo-sized gravel pitches fully serviced with water and electricity, 24/7 video surveillance for the complete security of your vehicles and all the usual waste disposal amenities.
Also on hand is a chillout room with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside and barbecues for grilling up your own food. You can order regional dishes – think spiced pork sausage and curd cheese – from the on-site restaurant and dine in style on the terrace. If the fancy takes you, learn more about local produce at pasta-making workshops, or join in with the olive harvest if your dates coincide.
The site owners offer guided tours of Matera’s cave houses and many of the cultural hotspots of Basilicata, as well as a transfer service so you don’t need to drive.

Local attractions
One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, photogenic Matera (10 minutes’ drive) is best known for its subterranean network of ‘sassi’ cave houses, buried deep into limestone cliffs. You can look across at the dwellings stacked up the hillside from the Belvedere di Murgia Timone, and explore the underground water cistern sitting below Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
A visit to the protected Regional Park of the Murgia Matera and the Rock Churches (15 minutes) reveals abandoned churches like Chiesa Rupestre di San Nicola all’Ofra – where you can still see a few faded frescoes – cut deep into the hillside. To see more complete biblical paintings dating back to the 8th century, follow a marked trail to the exquisite Crypt of Original Sin (10 minutes).
To prevent cultural overload, cool off with a swim in the Lago di San Giuliano (also 10 minutes), have a stroll around the shoreline and keep your eyes peeled for herons and egrets nesting among the reeds.
