What a peaceful spot this is: greenly scenic Tranquil Pines Rose Garden Cottage is right in the middle of the quiet village of Újireg in Hungary’s Tolna County, a place overflowing with health-giving waterways and hot spring spas, as well as vineyards, nature reserves and hiking trails... And as this cottage is of a nudism-optional nature, this is a top spot for all such pursuits whether you like to hol with your kit on or off. It's 15 minutes’ drive from here to the smashing spa resort of Tamási and 80 minutes' drive from the vineyard-covered hills around Balatonfüred; for something more active, however, your friendly hosts Andrew and Sharon are on hand to organise days out like quad biking, horseback tours, guided hikes and seasonal fishing and birdwatching trips. The site’s well-appointed cottage stands alone, and has an open plan living area, a well-equipped kitchen, two comfy bedrooms and a modern shower room. There's also a covered porch and terrace area with outdoor furniture for relaxed evenings gazing out across the surrounding countryside. Provide Sharon and Andrew with your arrival time when you book, and they’ll arrange to meet you to take you back to the cottage and give you your keys; handily, they’re also happy to pick you up and drop you off at either Budapest Ferenc Liszt or Hévíz–Balaton airports for a small fee.

Local attractions

It's around half an hour's drive from here to the closest edge of Lake Balaton's lovely 197-kilometre shoreline, which is bordered by beaches all the way around and surrounded by volcanic hills and thermal spa resorts. The town of Siófok is the closest lakeside settlement worth stopping off at if you fancy exploring the lake's perimeter: you can spend your time sampling local eats and tipples among the many bars, restaurants and cafés that line its popular Petőfi walkway, or getting stuck into sandside games at its kid-friendly beach. If you're after somewhere alongside the lake with even more splendid views, do yourself a big favour and drive the (highly scenic) 80 minutes it takes to get to Balatonfüred. Settled into the hills of the lake's northern shore, this spot has somewhat of a more serene vibe than partyish Siófok, is surrounded by hills carpeted with vineyards and nature-filled marshes, and crisscrossed by the walking routes of the Balaton Uplands National Park.
