With gorgeous scenery, outdoor activities, traditional villages and historic attractions, plus – crucially – easy access via a road bridge, it’s no wonder Lefkada is one of the most popular of the Ionian Islands. If you’re planning a trip to this wonderful Greek destination this summer, take a look at Nirikos Camping, a tree-filled site in Vourlaki Kariotes.
At this quiet location you’ll be staying in the shade of the olive trees a short walk from Kariotes beach and the village’s handful of shops and restaurants. Lefkada town is about five minutes’ drive away for more shops and places to eat, plus heritage sites and activity centres. There are bikes for hire on site to make getting into town (or to other nearby locations) nice and easy.
Hiking, boat trips, winery visits, watersports and beach days may well fill much of your time here, but on site it’s all about relaxation. The spacious outdoor pool area is at the centre of it all, with a paddling pool for the kids and plenty of sun loungers for the grownups. There’s also a play area for active youngsters, and benches and tables scattered throughout the property for those guests who’d prefer some quiet time (perhaps with a snack from the site’s mini market).
Snacks alone won’t suffice, of course, so it’s handy that this park has a barbecue area (with plenty of picnic tables) and a shared kitchen for self-catering guests and a restaurant for those who don’t fancy cooking. Just need a cool drink? They’re on hand at the bar, which runs happy hour promotions to make things just that little bit better.

Local attractions
Kariotes beach (10 minutes’ walk) is the closest beach to the site, and a nice place for a paddle from a pebble beach. For a sandy beach, you’ll need to cross to the other side of Lefkada town to reach Paralia Agios Ioannis (10 minutes’ drive), a place that’s particularly popular with windsurfers.
There are lots more beaches around the island, too – try Kathisma (25 minutes) Egremni (50 minutes) or Porto Katsiki (an hour). Meanwhile, the bay at Vasiliki (40 minutes) is popular for watersports, and there are boat tours around the island from Nydri (15 minutes).
If you’re heading to Nydri, you may also like to take the hike from there to the nearby waterfalls. For more hikes, try places like Melissa Gorge (20 minutes) or the uphill trails at Skaros (25 minutes). You may like to stop at a winery along the way to taste wines made from the local grapes, or perhaps tie your walks in with visits to Faneromeni Monastery (10 minutes) and Folklore Museum of Karya (20 minutes).
