A wildlife haven and a hikers’ paradise, this site’s setting is in the valley of Manderscheid in the southern Vulkaneifel, not far from the Moseberg volcanic group and the Meerfelder Maar. Surrounded by crater lakes, maars, volcanoes and castles in a very natural landscape, this place can be reached on foot (and in terms of walking trails, the area is one of the most densely networked). As spa seekers will know, a land filled with volcanoes means bubbling thermal springs and historic spa towns too: this region has both, along with plenty of hiking and biking trails around the area's wooded slopes, lakes, foothills and protected reserves. Natur-Camping Vulkaneifel is a kilometre from the handsome spa village of Manderscheid, where the Eifelsteig trail and the Vulkanbike Trailpark both pass through. Back at base, buy rolls and bread (available to order), Demeter eggs and basic groceries during season. Breakfast is available upon request, but handily, there are also two supermarkets in Manderscheid within walking distance of the site. There’s a lot to be getting on with too, on a green and south-facing slope directly next to a forest, with grounds dotted by mature fruit trees and hedges. Only a third of the property is dedicated to accommodation, leaving the other two thirds for leisurely pursuits. The sanitary facilities are simply furnished, clean and hygienic, or there are four single cabins (each with a toilet, wash basin and shower) that can be used for a small price. After a pool day? There’s an outdoor swimming pool in Manderscheid, where grownups and kids might well end up spending a fair bit of their leisure times. More larking about can be done around the spacious playground on site or over at the multisports field, where guests of all ages and sporting persuasions can play the likes of ping pong, volleyball, badminton, basketball and football.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (no cars)

Liked: We visited the campsite last year and loved the stay so much that we had to come back. This site is clean, spacious and well organised. We love how this site has easy access to a wide variety of hikes in the area. The site itself is accommodating for tents, campers as well as large groups of friends or schools who book out the lodges so there’s always a good bustle of people around. The reception also has a few items like beer, snacks and info of the surrounding area. The waste are is split up into different sections so you can waste bio products, glass, cardboard, plastic and general waste all separately. We enjoyed our second stay just as much as the first and will be back again in the future!

Disliked: A large group, which arrived the day after us, had extended their pitch onto the walking patch to the camping meadow where we were staying, which made it very difficult to get to and from our tent.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Schöner natürlicher Campingplatz mit großen Stellplätzen. Einfacher Check-In. Wanderrouten direkt vor Ort startend. Tolle Lage.

Disliked: Sanitäranlagen veraltet, aber sehr sauber. Der Weg dahin ist u.U. weiter. Kein WLAN-Empfang an unserem Stellplatz.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The staff were really helpful and friendly. The pitch allocation was spacious, flat and we were lucky as there was hardly anyone else on our row (presumably because late in the season). The showers and toilets were regularly cleaned and there was as plenty of hot water and good water pressure.

Disliked: Be aware that this site is used for school trips. This didn’t worry us as they were well behaved and used separate toilet blocks.

Electric optional grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice location with lots to do nearby.

Disliked: Whole site needs modernisation, wifi doesn't work in the motor home pitches. We were woken up by late check ins setting up (gone midnight) and it is generally noisy at night. There's a farm nearby that uses loud machinery late into the night.

Electric optional grass pitch (no pets)

'You van tell the yourself.' Ik kan vertellen dat mensen ergens niet mogen staan? Een beetje vreemde gedachtengang.

Local attractions

The area around Manderscheid is well known for the abundance of hiking and cycling trails among scenic volcanic mountains and lakes, like the Mosenberg volcanoes and the Wacholdergelände bei Bleckhausen (aka the Bleckhausen Juniper Conservation Area). Hikes can start directly from the square too, over the Meerfelder Maar craters, the Moseberg volcanic group and the Wolfsschlucht. You might want to take the Lieser Trail or sojourn to Manderscheid Castle, half an hour’s walk away.Tthe side-by-side castle ruins of Manderscheid, where the local museum tells the story of the area’s medieval past; the upper castle of Oberburg is free to visit and there’s a small fee to take a look around lower Niederburg. In Daun (15 minutes), join the Kosmos and Maare-Moselle cycle route near the famed maars. However, if you’re after something rather more sedate, Manderscheid also has several volcanic spa resorts for pampering and wellness treatments and there are attractions like Wildlife and adventure park Daun (20 minutes) and Trier (55 minutes) accessible by car.
