Moor yourself for watery hols at Camping Strandhaus Sonsfeld, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Cleves town of Rees and 25 minutes from Bocholt. This is a top spot for anyone who’s as comfortable on water as on land. On the banks of the Hageneer Meer oxbow lake, this scenic site makes it easy to have splashing time: dive into the swimming area on the edge of the lake, hire rowboats or pedalos to stay dry, and bring along that rod for a bit of fishing. There’s plenty hereabouts for landlubbers too: kids in need of some on-site time can entertain themselves at the playground, on the trampoline or with a match or two of table tennis. There’s a forested area less than five minutes’ walk away for leafy wanders too, and biking and hiking trails nearby for longer jaunts. No need to fret about meal time when activities lead to hunger either… The nearby villages are safe bets for visiting restaurants. Cold drinks are available on site should you want them.

Liked: Welcoming reception after 22 in rain

Disliked: Couldnt camp on grass due to rain. Trains passing 4x/hour very loud. Ended up going back to Rees to stay in hotel.

Disliked: Not good pitches for tents as a site for cabins and caravans Showers where unclean with rubbish in them. Whole site had lots of rubbish around it

Liked: Wir haben den Aufenthalt wieder sehr genossen. Wir sind zum 2.Mal da gewesen und würden auch immer wieder kommen. Einkaufsmöglichkeiten fußläufig oder mit dem Rad super zu erreichen.

Disliked: Das einzige was uns gestört hat war, das manche Mitcamper die Toilette in einem fürchterlichen Zustand hinterlassen haben. Und die Duschmarken sind mit 2€/Duschevorgang doch sehr teuer.

Disliked: Waschhaus sehr sehr einfach. 4 Tage keiner geputzt. Teilweise kein warmes Wasser. Gaststätte war geschlossen obwohl in der Beschreibung angepriesen wurde.

Liked: The quirkiness of the site. We was able to get in the river for a swim and to paddle board which was great. Nice and small which is what we like

Disliked: Hard to find anyone to direct us to we’re we needed to go Showers were 2 euros which was expensive for 7 minutes

Liked: Slightly curious site on the sloping front lawn of a former restaurant with an ox- bow lake (old Rhine?) at the base. Narrow lane through cabins to get to pitches. Quiet, clean basic facilities. Showers 1€. Free wi-fi. No shop. Warm welcome. Cash payment requested. Suited us as a stop over.

Liked: The campsite is next to a small lake with recreation possibilities (two boats that are free to use, and swimming seems to be possible despite a sign forbidding it). Furthermore, there is a nice terrace bar and a trampoline. The owner is generally quite friendly. All in all a positive experience.

Disliked: The pitch is rather small and there isn't a lot of privacy when all plots are taken, as was our case. The whole campsite gives the impression of being neglected (the washrooms are old and smelly, the playground is looking in a bad shape, the restaurant is not open). Shower tokens are a bit expensive at 2€ apiece (despite the website mentioning they cost 1€).

Liked: Location was peaceful

Disliked: No beer garden or restaurant or swimming pool!! Surely rates should be cheaper if these facilities are closed or we should be told that they’re not open!! Only given electricity for one night although we paid for two!! Strange fobs for electricity & water. Not very helpful & didn’t speak English so how can we complain? German sites so far have been the worst with unfriendly management & facilities closed. I think we should be refunded if they do not have advertised beer gardens & restaurants etc

Local attractions

If spending time wandering city streets appeals, this is a particularly well-placed site. The closest city is Oberhausen (half an hour’s drive away) where there’s an aquarium to explore, and an indoor Legoland Discovery Centre provides the building blocks for a top-notch hol. The indoor ski slope in Bottrop is 40 minutes away, as is the city’s impressive tetrahedron sculpture, with climbs of the latter leading to some pretty views over the countryside. More traditional city experiences can be had in Essen 50 minutes from the site, with museums to learn in, a mansion to be envious of, botanic gardens to stroll about and (of course) plenty of shopping to do. City days don’t all have to take place in the present either – LVR-Römermuseum (on the site of the old Roman city of Colonia Uldia Traiana), Germany’s largest archaeological open-air museum, is less than half an hour from base and a must-visit for history buffs keen on seeing reconstructed amphitheatres and temples, experiencing life in ancient times, and watching plenty of re-enactments and shows. Got kids in tow? Make tracks first for Bocholt, 25 minutes away, where the indoor waterpark will keep them entertained (and grownups can treat themselves to spa days), then to Kernie’s Wunderland (15 minutes) to spin around rides and zoom along rollercoasters. Budding zoologists might prefer days among the animals, so make sure Biotopwildpark Anholter Schweiz (15 minutes) and Kleve zoo (half an hour) are on the list.
