Built on the banks of the placid river Elde, surrounded by the splendid natural landscapes of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in north-eastern Germany, Ufercamp Eldeblick is a peaceful wildlife haven for anyone who’s after hiking adventures, watersports and fishing or birdwatching expeditions.
This is wild camping – but with more than a handful of additional perks, starting with the toilet and shower block (which also includes a parent-and-baby washroom), and continuing with the communal washing-up area. That’s if you even need to take care of the dishes: the on-site bistro might steer you away from barbecue duties with its traditional German dishes – from currywurst to schnitzel (plus beer, of course). There are more restaurants (and plenty of shops and supermarkets) in the town of Parchim (10 minutes’ drive).
After a meal, you might want (or need…) to kick-start your digestion with a walk in the nearby countryside, so grab your four-legged companion and go on a riverside stroll, or cast your net a little wider and head to Lewitz - Landkreis Ludwigslust (25 minutes), a nature reserve with large areas of forest, waterways, fishing ponds and the Aussichtspunkt Dütschower Brücke, an observation tower from where you can take it all in. This is also where you might spot birds like ospreys and kingfishers.
Travelling with your canoe? You can launch it from the on-site marina, where it is also possible to hire a pedal boat; if you fancy a swim, Treptowsee (15 minutes) is a lake with a sandy beach backed by woodland (meaning there’s always plenty of shade).

Local attractions
Groß Raden Archaeological Open Air Museum (45 minutes’ drive) takes you back to the Slavic period of the 10th century with recreated buildings, exhibitions and events. The surrounding forest, Sternberg Lake District, is laced with hiking and cycling trails, while its watercourses are popular habitats for beavers.
The capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schwerin (50 minutes) spreads on the south-western shore of the Schwerinersee lake. The elegant Schwerin Castle, distinctive for its golden dome, sits on an island on the lake. Its splendid manicured gardens include a canal, an arbour and an events venue.
Rainy day spoiling your plans? On the outskirts of Wittenberge (one hour and five minutes), Funtasy World is an indoor adventure centre with trampolines, climbing walls and laser tag. You (and the kids, of course…) can also have a go at a ninja-style challenge, and there’s a play area for younger children.
