Beaujolais for the red drinkers, Mâcon-Villages for those who prefer a white… you’re very firmly in wine-producing territory at Camping de la Chalaronne, with heaps of top-notch producers easily accessed from this handy location in the village of Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne. One could easily spend many a day pottering around the many local vineyards and producers, stopping for fine foodie foraging as you wend your way along the wine route. Such activity is not highly recommended for those travelling en famille, however, so those with nippers in tow will be chuffed to hear of plenty of family-friendly activities nearby too: an animal park, château trails and waterskiing should hopefully go some way towards keeping the smalls happy. Staying on site for a bit may well please the small sorts as well, with games of table tennis and pétanque to play, and assorted activities arranged for them in the summer months. Meanwhile, those who appreciate the joys of sitting quietly for a bit can take a rod to the Chalaronne river in search of carp, perch and catfish. Not been successful with catching your dinner? No matter – the site’s restaurant (open during high season only) serves up a range of tasty fare and sweet treats out on the terrace, and it’s only a few minutes’ amble into town for more restaurants, a supermarket and a bakery.

Lovely quiet spot by the river, close to a quaint village with shops. Spacious, tidy pitches, and spotless facilities. Great grub and friendly staff at the restaurant. Watch out for bugs by the water and run out of loo roll. Manager assures wastewater info is to hand and the village is a stroll.

Large pitches and overall a very good campsite
Great for the little ferry boat to cross into Avignon

Reasonably priced

Disliked Late in the season so the shop was pretty empty of goods

Shower block only has cold water so not ideal , may have been an issue with the boiler as saw the door open later in the day

Very expensive for bare minimum facilities booked through Pitchup!

Liked Situated close to a nice village.

Disliked Most things about this site were very much below average compared to the many campsites we have visited over the last 40 years in France.Very expensive for a tired and tatty campsite. We definitely will not be returning.

Liked Goed restaurantje, aardig personeel en lekker gegeten. Ligt gezellig met een speeltuintje en jeu de boules veldje daarnaast. Mini kinderboerderijtje.

Camping midden in dorpje.
Op leuke plek aan het water gestaan. Inmiddels 2x op deze camping geweest, prima onderwegcamping. Wel een paar smalle straatjes om er te komen, maar het is te doen.

Disliked Toiletgebouwen hebben geen toiletbril op de wc. Dat er geen papier is, oké, maar op zo’n pot zonder bril kan je niet zitten…

Keurig (nieuw) toiletgebouw, maar was betere investering geweest om die dicht te maken.

Tip: neem Deet of citronella mee, er zijn wat muggen langs de plekken aan de waterkant.

Those who appreciate a glass of vino or few will no doubt wish to visit a couple of vineyards while in the area – there are plenty within a few kilometres, including several that you could cycle to in around half an hour. Proper hardcore wine buffs can take in the whole of the 140-kilometre Beaujolais Wine Route for a more in-depth insight into the area’s offerings. Folks holidaying with the famille will no doubt wish to limit such endeavours and consider instead days out at Touroparc Zoo, 10 minutes’ drive from the site, or the excellent Bird Park half an hour away in Villars-les-Dommes. More adventurous types can have a go at waterskiing or wakeboarding in Mâcon, half an hour’s drive from the site.
