  • Peaceful landscaped site in the 'European Grand Canyon'
  • A short drive to the prehistoric paintings of Chauvet cave
  • Outdoor pool and hot tub, plus hikes and bike rides around the site
Book your hols, pack your picnic and plan your day trip to the Grand Canyon. Yes, the other one: the fab Gorges de l’Ardèche in the south of France are so mightily impressive they're known as the European Grand Canyon. It’s a half-hour drive to the gorgeous gorges from Les Roulottes et Cabanes de Saint Cérice, a glamping site a kilometre from the village of Vogüé on the banks of the Ardèche. Base yourselves here and you’ll also be within easy reach of plenty of other activities and attractions – canoeing, château visits and caves to name but a few. Around the site’s five wooded hectares there’s plenty of family-friendly fun to be had – a dip in the outdoor swimming pool, perhaps, or a game of tennis, pétanque or table tennis. There’s loads of space for kids to run around and play games, and they’ve also got a playground to hang out in and wifi access to keep in touch with their mates. Make the most of being out in the open by cooking up an alfresco feast – the communal barbecue awaits and you can pick up all the bits you need from the shops down in the village. For a real holiday treat, follow it up by hiring the site’s private hot tub and relaxing in bubbling warmth among these woodland views all around.

Local attractions

A 15-minute stroll from the site takes you to Vogüé, a traditional little village with a medieval château updated with modern touches including colourful stained glass windows. After your visit, hire canoes or kayaks to paddle down the Ardèche; the local hire centre will give you maps and pick you up at the end of your trip to return you to the village for a well-earned drink. Drive for 15 minutes (or canoe for an hour and a half) to reach Balazuc, a medieval gem clinging to the cliffs above the river and with a splendid castle and church to visit. 25 minutes away, Labeaume was once home to a troglodyte village and now is worth visiting for its ruined castle and to paddle or swim from the river beach. Further along the river, a half-hour drive from the site, is the town of Vallon Pont d’Arc, where you can again rent canoes to take you to some of the area’s most popular features including the 34-metre-high Pont d’Arc stone arch, and the craggy Gorges de l’Ardèche beyond. Caving, canyoning and climbing excursions are possible from here too. A few minutes’ drive from Vallon Pont d’Arc is the Chauvet cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the world’s best-preserved prehistoric cave art.
