Local town Villeneuve-de-Berg is within 30 kilometres of three of the Grand Sites of France, the Ardèche and Gardon gorges and the jaw-dropping subterranean stalactites and stalagmites of the Aven d'Orgnac caves: all three need at least a day each. Also a must within 30 kilometres is the Pont-d'Arc, the huge natural stone bridge straddling the Ardèche river. Canoeing and kayaking are both popular here, along the river, under the bridge and into the spectacular Ardèche Canyon. The Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave, with the earliest discovered palaeolithic cave paintings in the world, is near the bridge. Closer to home at 10 kilometres away, the Parc Animalier de Lussas is a good option for a family day out, as is the troglodyte dwelling of the Balmes de Montbrun nine kilometres away. Around the diverse landscapes of the Monts d'Ardèche Natural Regional Park, tackle the 315 kilometres of mountain biking trails or hike the hills before sinking into one of the park's three thermal spas.
