- Peaceful family site surrounded by chestnut groves in the Ardèche
- Joyeuse 10 minutes’ drive; Pont d’Arc and Aven d’Orgnac 50 minutes
- Swimming pool and pétanque court; restaurant terrace with views
Gentle hills covered in chestnut trees and vineyards as far as the eye can see: if that sounds like the kind of landscape that you want to gaze at during your next holiday, perhaps while sipping a glass of local wine, then Camping Les Châtaigniers might just be the spot for you.
This peaceful, family-friendly site in the village of Ribes sits close to the edge of an escarpment overlooking the windy La Baume river, in the Ardèche department. The dramatic landscape invites long woodland hikes – and it’s worth noting that you’re about a one-hour drive from the visitors’ centre of the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d’Ardèche, where you can get details on the best and most scenic trails in the area.
However, Les Châtaigniers is also a good option for those who want to do not a lot besides relaxing. Oh, go on… maybe a spot of swimming wouldn’t go amiss – thank goodness for the pool, then, with loungers on one side and lush vegetation on the other. After a dip, you can head to the pétanque court or to the restaurant/bar, where you can grab a seat on the covered terrace and admire the views over the valley.
There’s also a barbecue area (with picnic tables) if you’d rather cook your own meals; for provisions, start at the on-site food shop; if they don’t stock what you need, take the 10-minute drive to the village of Joyeuse, which has supermarket, bakeries and a wine shop, plus plenty of restaurants.
In addition to a play area, the site caters to parents with a baby changing room; there are also a toilet block with showers and a washing-up area.

Local attractions
Among the residents at the Parc Animalier des Gorges de l'Ardèche (45 minutes) are wild oxen, goats and peacocks. In addition to activities like pony rides and gold-panning sessions, there’s also a waterpark with spray jets. From there, it’s a five-minute drive to Accrobranche Indy Parc, with treetop walks and zipwires.
On a sweltering summer’s day, you might like to head to Aven d’Orgnac (50 minutes), where you can explore subterranean caverns filled with stalactites and other rock formations – and where the temperature is a refreshing 12ºC. Activities here include an intro to caving for kids and (for the grown-ups) a wine-tasting session.
The natural stone arch known as Pont d’Arc (50 minutes), on the Ardèche river, is a popular spot for swimming and picnics. Canoes and paddleboards are available for hire, or you can sail under the arch on a flat-bottomed boat with the moustachioed Dominique, also known as the Boatman of the Pont d’Arc.
