  • Tree-shaded Ardèche campsite with views of the Cévennes foothills
  • Pont d’Arc and Grotte Chauvet 2 – Ardèche both 40 minutes’ drive
  • Swimming and spa pools; sports courts and games room; grocery store
Southern Ardèche mountain views, a spa pool with water jets and scrummy Lablachère wines for sale. And that’s just for grown-ups staying at Camping du Vignal. Book your slot at this leafy spot in the Cévennes foothills of the Rhône-Alpes, and your kids will be running around the play area, splashing about in the swimming pool, playing table football in the games room or challenging each other to volleyball and basketball matches all day long. The campsite is set on a series of terraces (faïsses) up the hillside and protected from the heat of the day by the shade of acacia and oak trees. You’ll wake up to birdsong and hear the buzz of cicadas by day as you lounge on the pool sundeck, with its spectacular backdrop of forested mountains on the horizon. If you’re up for mingling with fellow guests, there’s an aperitif evening during the week in high season, where you can get to taste the aforementioned Lablachère wines before you buy. Other tasty local treats sold on site include garden vegetables (lots of tomatoes bursting with flavour for salads and picnic lunches), olive oils, farm-produced terrines and ready meals. There are padlocked fridges near the facilities block in which to store your goodies – ask for keys at reception.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: The amount of space per pitch was great and the check in was very easy. Toilets ect were cleaned daily and were nice. Pool was a defo bonus!

Disliked: The water taps that are nearby need drinking water or do not drink signs on them so campers know which ones are safe to use.

Local attractions

The Rhône-Alpes is a land of extraordinary natural features: the meanders of the River Ardèche cut deep into its namesake gorge, spanned by the soaring Pont d’Arc limestone arch (40 minutes’ drive), and you can head up to the Belvédère du Serre de Tourre viewing point (45 minutes) to see ranks of forested peaks heading to the horizon. There are more gorgeous views throughout the Réserve Naturelle Nationale des Gorges de l’Ardèche (50 minutes), which is a hub for kayaking down white waters at Rapide de la Fare (also 50 minutes), canyoning and via ferrata rock-climbing courses (20 minutes) and mountain biking on challenging trails. Going underground, tour the vast cave complex at Aven d’Orgnac (45 minutes), and check out the replica prehistoric paintings at Grotte Chauvet 2 – Ardèche (40 minutes). Food buffs may like to potter around markets selling local produce like sweet chestnut jam and Picodon goats’ cheese at Lablachère (five minutes), Rosières (10 minutes) and in the cobbled alleys of Les Vans (20 minutes). Wine lovers can visit vineyards at Lablachère and Selve (15 minutes) for touring, tasting and buying.
