  • On the banks of the Rhône river and surrounded by vineyards
  • 20 minutes' drive from the nougat-producing town of Montélimar
  • Fishing lake, outdoor swimming pool, restaurant, bar and playground
Water, water everywhere – oui, take a look up at the pics and you’ll note the presence of a rather fine fishing lake and a most enticing outdoor swimming pool at Camping Les Ilons. And that’s not all, as the site is right on the banks of mighty Rhône river to give the whole place a splendid aquatic outlook. Those fond of a tipple or two may also recognise the Rhône Valley as one of those super places where they turn water into wine, and indeed the site’s backdrop is completed by the surrounding vineyards (eau, how marvellous). It’s not all about the aqua around these parts, though – other fave visits nearby take in forest walks, craggy gorges, palaeolithic caves and over 300 kilometres of mountain bike trails in the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park. And if you feel faint at the thought of such active times, perhaps pop down to Montélimar, half an hour away, a place so sweet-toothed it has not only a whole host of shops where you can nibble nougat but also its very own museum dedicated to sweets. Don’t indulge too much though or you won’t be able to eat your dinner – and that would be a shame as the site’s restaurant-bar is the place to be of an evening, with a menu of not only tasty dishes but also organised entertainment on its spacious terrace. Should you choose to spend some of your daylight hours lurking on site, you’ll be able to take dips in that lovely pool or aid your small splashers in the paddling pool. And you can take your pick from serene times waiting for a bite at the fishing lake, or somewhat more boisterous behaviour at the playground or in the games room.

Local attractions

There are some really rather lovely villages to poke around in nearby – visit the 12th-century fortress in Rochemaure, 15 minutes away, explore the Roman ruins at Alba-la-Romaine, half an hour away or take a 45-minute drive to Vogüé to see a gorgeous medieval village on a cliff overlooking the Ardèche river. A village of a different kind is the collection of troglodyte dwellings at Balmes de Montbrun, 45 minutes away by car. Park up and take a walk of an hour or so to get to the basalt cliffs to see the remnants of a castle, a chapel and several homes. For more splendid geological features, it’ll take you an hour or so to get to the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Natural Park (armed with your boots or a mountain bike if you’d like to hit the forest trails) or the Gorges de l’Ardèche, where you can canoe through the Pont-d’Arc stone arch or visit the Aven d’Orgnac cave. If you’re partial to a chunk (or several) of nougat, you’ll do rather well in Montélimar – it’ll take you 20 minutes to get there in the car and you can spend most of a day flitting from shop to shop to sample all the sweets, as well as visiting the museum dedicated to sweets (and especially local fave nougat). To avoid a complete sugar rush, perhaps intersperse your nibbles with visits to the two contemporary art museums, the toy museum or the European Fighter Aircraft Museum.
