Gorgeous scenery, heaps of outdoor activities and a lovely laidback place to stay while you take it all in – if that sounds like the sort of holiday you have in mind, take a look at Camping Domaine Napoléon.
This attractive site is tucked into woodland in the foothills of the Hautes-Alpes, about 10 minutes’ drive from Gap and a similar distance from the edge of the Écrins National Park. That makes this a superb base for all sorts of sports and nature outings, as it’s got easy access to hiking routes, running trails, mountain biking, road biking and climbing in the alpine foothills.
Still got some energy left? Watersports at Lac de Serre-Ponçon are 25 minutes’ drive away. The site is also just five minutes from the 18-hole course at Golf de Gap-Bayard, and 15 minutes from walking trails in the Champsaur and Valgaudemar valleys – where peaks reach 3,200 metres.
The rural surroundings are fabulous, but having the town so close by is a real bonus too – Gap’s winding streets are home to a raft of shops (including those selling mountain-sports equipment and clothing), bistros and bars, along with activity organisers.
Back on site, life is pretty easy. You can lounge on the south-facing sundeck, take a dip in pool or chill out while the kids run about at the play park – you’ll have gorgeous mountain views whichever you choose. The restaurant serves up speciality wood-fired pizzas on its sun-trap terrace, and drinks, snacks or ice creams are available any time of day from the café throughout July and August.

Liked The restaurant was lovely and good value. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The site is close to Gap and the lovely walks up Pic de Charance. We had a pretty view from our pitch.
Kids loved the trampoline and pool
Disliked The site has, like lots of others we have found, suffered from investment in permanent cabins / holiday homes and the pitches are a bit random in terms of size and setup. Our pitch was lovely and big but neighbours pitches were small and scraggy...
Toilet facilities were not particularly clean. One of the 2 washing up stations didn't have hot water and the door of one of the 2 shower cubicles isn't hung properly so it opens into you while using the washing basin unless you prop it with a brush

Local attractions
Bring your boots, bikes… and a sense of adventure. This area has a huge list of hiking and mountain bike trails to try out, along with thrills like rafting, climbing and canyoning activities in and around the Écrins National Park. You can also saddle up for horseback tours locally or book in for a fabulously scenic round at Golf de Gap-Bayard (10 minutes’ drive).
For a change of scenery, head to the shores of Lac de Serre-Ponçon (25 minutes) for walking trails of various lengths, and the chance to try ziplines and treetop trails at Serre Ponçon Adventures. Back at ground level there are watersports rentals available, plus lake beaches where you can relax and admire the turquoise waters.
Time to dial things down a bit? Take a trip to Gap to stroll through its pretty streets and stop off in some of its shops and wine bars. A little way from the town, explore rural life at Ecomusée de l artisanat and roam through the rose gardens at Domaine de Charance (both 15 minutes).
