Cast off thy clothes and thy cares upon arrival at Origan Village Naturiste, a fably well set up naturist site in the beaut Provençal hills. The secluded spot sits on a hillside, surrounded by woods, overlooking the banks of the River Var and a 10-minute drive from the village of Puget-Théniers. Comings and goings are simple even for the car-free traveller thanks to the station handily located on the edge of the village. You may shed your togs here but you’ll want to keep your walking boots to hand, as friendly staff site can advise on all sorts of au naturel activities close to the site, including hikes, climbing on via ferrata routes and swimming from the adjacent river beach. If you choose to stay on site, you’ll still find heaps to do – play a game of tennis or table tennis, gather some willing neighbours at the volleyball court or channel your inner Robin Hood by firing a few arrows at the archery area. There’s a pétanque court (natch – this is France, after all) and a fitness area where healthsome guests can feel the fresh air as they work out. More of a relaxing-in-the-sun type? Fear not. Gathered in a central location are a large main pool along with a shallow paddling pool for les petits. Flop down on a sun lounger for the duration or take to the waters with a splash by hurtling down the waterslide – all options are open. Any aches and pains generated by all this activity (or life in general) can be dealt with by taking to the sauna, bubbling in the hot tub or a good old pummelling in the massage area. Got les enfants in tow? They’re welcome to enjoy most of the leisure facilities too, along with their very own playground (next to the pool area, for surreptitious supervision by parentals) and a bunch of activities devised specially for them in and around the site during the summer months. Obviously all this activity can’t happen without some healthy nourishment, so clear a time in your schedule for meals at the restaurant or just pick up a takeaway to enjoy at your leisure. Grills are provided for DIY types, and there’s a mini market to supply all your essentials without the need to stray from the site. Elsewhere, the lounge bar and terraces provide places to sit and sup a drink in comfort whatever the weather. Underpinning this gargantuan leisure offering is a solid network of the necessaries: plentiful washing-up points and toilet blocks are dotted around the park, with showers, disabled bathrooms, shaving points and hairdryers at your disposal. And you can afford to pack really light as the launderette can freshen up the minimal amount of clothing you’ll be using should you need.

Local attractions

Amid all the active pursuits on site it’s worth finding time to get out and about in the area. Start by venturing down to the village of Puget-Théniers to have a wander around the village’s traditional streets and shops, and look out for medieval sculpted doorways and stone engravings. Afterwards, take a trip on the Train des Pignes steam train through the surrounding woods and valleys to reach Nice or Digne-les-Bains. For those who like to explore on foot, the Mercantour National Park is about half an hour away and has plenty of trails including a two-hour circular walk that’s ideal for families – keep your eyes open for local wildlife including chamois goats and marmots. More challenging hiking and climbing routes can be found in the Gorges Daluis (25 minutes away) or the Gorges de Cians (45 minutes away). Wet’n’wild fun can be had on the River Var from Entrevaux, a 15-minute drive from the site, with a rafting, canoeing or kayaking trip. Brave types can also sign up for canyoning excursions from Riolan, 45 minutes away, to walk, jump, swim and climb their way through the rocks and rivers. If you’d like to head to the Med coast, it will take you somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half to reach Nice, either by car or on the train. The beaches here are rightly famed, but it’s also worth taking a walk through the Old Town and climbing up to Castle Hill for a fab view over the city and the sea. The cathedral and National Marc Chagall Museum await for those who’d like a spot of culture.
