Pondering a getaway within a short drive of a protected natural park in the Alpes-Maritimes department…? Or how about a stay near not one but three natural parks instead? If that sounds like a hol especially tailored to you, book in at Camping Lou Gourdan, around half an hour’s drive from the edges of peak-covered Mercantour National Park, the towering Verdon Gorge and the forested hills of the Préalpes d'Azur… This site’s a hotspot for hiking in lush scenery without going too far at all – it also sits right on the Var river around a 10-minute drive from the Cians gorge, with mesmerising views of hills from its grounds. If the picnic basket needs filling for trips out canyoning, rafting, canoeing and climbing in the local area, shops selling French fare are in the pretty village of Puget-Théniers, 10 minutes’ walk away; buses and trains – including the traditional Pignes steam train with scenic views – also leave from here to the Côte d'Azur city of Nice (with journeys taking about an hour and a half). Staying on site for a while instead? Rest up in between adventures in the bright and spacious communal lounge with its free wifi and board games. A sports complex with a sauna, weight and fitness room, plus squash and tennis courts, is nearby as well if you’re not too tired after trekking… The toilet and shower facilities (with mixer taps rather than push buttons) at Camping Lou Gourdan are also modern and well maintained.

Liked Best campsite we stayed at! Spotless facilities which are regularly cleaned. Spacious wash area with comfortable loos with seats (!), urinals, large showers. Plants and pictures in the washroom made everything feel well kept and like camping luxury.
Washing machine and airers provided for drying laundry.
Location wise - Puget Theniers is great for provisions and bars etc. We did a lovely hike straight from the campsite and also took the train to Nice which was a great journey and day out.
Friendly campsite staff too. Highly recommend!

Liked Beautifully peaceful location on the riverside. Shower/toilet block impeccably clean thanks to the campsite husband/wife combination. BBQ on site was fabulous. Very close to town with good selection of restaurants and shops-highly recommend

Liked Fabrice and the staff were absolutely great, they spoke a little English, we spoke a little French but this situation of trying to make yourself understood added to the joy and fun of our stay.
The camp site was small and charming with a heavy emphasis on the natural flora and fauna of the area, this left the site to appear weedy within the borders of the roadway, but seemed to add charm to the site.
The facilities were extremely clean and tidy and modern, they consisted of: urinals.
Hand washing sinks.
Toilet cubicals.
Shower cubicals.
Washing cubicals.
Dish washing facilities.
Laundry.
Relaxing room.
All of the above are found in one building at the entrance to Lou Gourdan Camping.
The village of Puget Thenniers is a charming place and sits right on the river Var within the mountainous area of Provance d’Maritime. With a little farmers market that take place every Sunday morning, a smallish Carrifore supermarket, a small train station with trains running hourly to and from Nice and the Côte d’Azur.

Liked The camping had a new structure and it was very organized. The bathroom area was the best I've ever found in camping sites. They had very good showers, private area with the sink to get dressed and brush the teeth and separate facilities with the toilet. I was very surprised with the managing and I highly recommend this place. It was about 1 hour away from Nice and it was a good point to explore the mountains around.

Liked We had a camping pitch with fresh drinking water and optional electricity. Everything was amazing: clean facilities, a chill area with beers and wines, kind staff, great view and the lovely sound of the river that helps you fall asleep.

In a very strategic positions 1h from Nice and close to hikes around the Alps.

Liked Hartelijke ontvangst! Schone faciliteiten met papier en zeep. Er is een broodservice en je kunt gebruikmaken van het nabijgelegen gemeentelijke zwembad. Loopafstand van het leuke dorpje Puget.

Disliked Op sommige plaatsen hoor je de naastgelegen weg maar op de meeste overheerst het geluid van de rivier.

Local attractions

You might need to book several weeks off work to maximise your time in this activity-packed area: there are many mountain biking trails to take – ask on site for recommendations – as well as cool canyons including Riolan, AIglun and the Saint-Auban (all less than 50 minutes’ drive away) for fishing and dips in clear waters. Enroute, explore mountain towns for a look at alpine life: Entrevaux, under 10 minutes’ drive away, has a medieval fortress and houses spilling down a hilltop while Annot (just over 20 minutes) is a pretty place with a backdrop of unusually shaped sandstone boulders. For driving trips a touch further on, get in the car and head towards Mercantour National Park through Clans for the Col de la Bonette – the highest paved road in Europe – or take another route via Cians to see the red-rock gorge. Southwards takes you away from the mountains and down to the coast, with the popular city of Nice being an hour and 10 minutes’ drive.
