  • Family-run site in the Ubaye Valley, on the banks of the River Ubaye
  • Well-placed for mountain trekking, cycling, fishing and river rafting
  • Swimming pool, bar and restaurant; fresh bread to order for mornings
Set up for a stay that’s as energetic or peaceful as you fancy at Camping River, a well-equipped site on the banks of the River Ubaye and on the border of the Mercantour National Park – relaxing spots to refresh and recharge are easy to happen upon here, as well as numerous sporting activities for when you want to pick up the pace. Take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool at this Alpes-de-Haute-Provence site or set up for some trout fishing in the lake; there’s also a pétanque court, table tennis and table football, and kids can blow off steam in the play area and sandpit. This spot’s got hunger pangs sorted too: the on-site restaurant serves up breakfasts and pizzas to eat in or take away, and snacks and ice creams are available for lighter bites. If you’re going off site for the day, ask the hosts to rustle up a picnic so you don’t miss out, and order fresh bread and croissants to be delivered directly to you in the mornings. To wash it all down, a fully licensed bar’s on hand at this south-eastern France site for local drinks to sip while relaxing on the terrace by the River Ubaye’s banks. For the practical bit, the park has toilets, hot showers, baby changing areas and laundry facilities.

Local attractions

When it’s time to head off into the wilds, this spot at the foot of the Vallon de Laverq has plenty of pursuits to pick from. Embark on explores of the area on foot or by bike – or raft, if that’s your preferred mode of transport – then set off to tour the trails of the Mercantour National Park. Overlooked by several peaks, the Ubaye Valley is a must for walkers and hikers wanting to explore the Alps. The site’s handily placed if you want to accept the challenge of the ‘Brevet des 7 Cols’ – climbing all seven of Ubaye’s cols – which is something only 400 people achieve each year. Not sure your legs are up to it? Bounce over to Barcelonnette, a historic Mexican-themed town, 20 minutes away instead or take off to the Fort de Tournoux (40 minutes) and Abbaye Notre-Dame de Boscodon (45 minutes) and admire the architecture. More culture’s to be had at the Musée Gassendi (an hour and a quarter), which displays oil paintings and sculptures, and thrills are in good supply at Plan d'Eau des Ferréols, a watersports lake around the same distance away.
