Never was a site so aptly named. Camping Calme et Nature is indeed both calm and surrounded by untamed nature – in fact this hilly, three-hectare site sits under the leafy shade of a canopy of trees. Set at an altitude of 756 metres in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and far removed from any road noise, it’s also the jumping off point for adventures in the spectacular Gorges du Verdon.
Many of you will fill your days exploring said gorges. But that’s not obligatory; you’re just as welcome to laze around on site all day, doing nothing more strenuous than reading a good book at your pitch – after all, if your kids are demanding more action, they can take themselves off to jump around on the trampoline, play pétanque or go paddling in the stream.
If you’ve chosen the former, more active itinerary for your holiday, grab a few tourist brochures from reception and plan your next day’s outing over early-evening drinks in the bar. And don’t forget that while barbecues are allowed on site (buy your food at Castellane shops, 20 minutes’ walk), you can actually leave the evening’s cooking to someone else in high season, so tuck into pizzas, burgers or salads safe in the knowledge that you don’t have to do the washing up. Take a deep breath and… relax.

- No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
- The restaurant is open between 01/07 and 31/08.

Local attractions
Camping Calme et Nature gives you direct access to challenging activities in the Verdon Regional Natural Park, from hiking up to craggy peaks or following the testing GR4 walking trail, mountain biking (hire them on site) along steep tracks or kayaking along the river. Close by is a rafting and canyoning centre (five minutes’ drive), while Lake Castillon (20 minutes) is the spot for dinghy sailing, paddleboarding and swimming.
Learn all there is to know about the iconic Citroën car at its namesake museum, or gen up on the dark goings-on in World War II at the Musée de la Résistance (both five minutes). And to experience something pretty unique, tour the towering sculptures of Jesus and Buddha at the Cité Sainte de Mandarom Shambhasalem (20 minutes).
Kids need to work off excess energy? There’s an outdoor swimming pool with waterslides in Castellane (20 minutes’ walk), or they can explore the Gorges du Verdon on horseback (40 minutes’ drive).
