Set in wildflower meadows in the Gâtinais countryside, Le Petit Camping de La Chagnée is a secluded, back-to-basics kind of site. Surrounding fishing ponds near the town of Saint Aubin Le Cloud, it’s a super spot for anglers, families – and indeed anyone with a love of nature. Sit quietly by the ponds and you’ll hopefully get to see swallows buzzing the surface, or dragonflies flitting around, and it’s so quiet here you can go to sleep listening to the song of frogs at nightfall. There are three hectares in which to wander, with peaceful waterside and woodland walks on site. And so to that fishing … you can fish for carp, perch, bass or roach from the fishing jetties dotted around the ponds, but everything you catch must go back into the water. If you’re not into fishing, then there are facilities for golf and horse riding close by, and a games room on site where you can challenge the family to ping pong and table football. Spacious pitches are all shaded by trees, there’s room for the car too, and simple facilities include a shower block and launderette. There’s a decent wifi connection too, if you need to keep in touch with folks back home. As well as fresh bread, you can pick up the basics (yes – wine and beer too) for the barbecue at the handy on-site shop.

Local attractions

It’s absolutely worth planning day trips to Puy du Fou theme park, to watch historical re-enactments with a cast of thousands, and round off the visit with a truly spectacular nightly firework display. Another family favourite is Futuroscope, packed with simulator rides and 4D adventures. Both are an hour's drive away. For time in nature you can potter down tree-shaded waterways in the marshy Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (an hour) in traditional flat-bottomed boats, or rent bikes to explore on waymarked trails. You might get lucky and spot cattle or horses grazing, and you’re sure to see lots of wading birds. More sedate pursuits might include a visit to Roman remains at Site gallo-romain de Sanxay (35 minutes), or a walk around the fortified walls in medieval Parthenay (15 minutes), with views of the Thouet river and old churches. This pretty town has a clutch of history museums in half-timbered buildings – and when you’ve had enough of culture, thankfully it’s got a lot of restaurants too.

nous tenions simplement à ajouter une précision. L'emplacement que vous occupiez ne se trouve pas à coté d'une sortie d'égout. il s'agit en fait du "trop plein" des étangs qui alimente un ruisseau affluent du Palais. l'eau qui coule de la buse derrière l'emplacement est donc de l'eau "propre" des étangs et non des eaux usées :)

Liked: Such a peaceful,tranquil site. Back to nature, so it was marvellous.
We overlooked the lake so it was lovely. A great stop off on the way to the Dordogne. Owners were very helpful too and we even bought dome of their wine!
