  • Family-run site in the Marais Poitevin marshland area
  • Fishing, boat and canoe trips and riverside walks near the site
  • Pool, play area, communal room and shop
What’s smashing about the setting of this peaceful family site is that it’s at the gateway to France’s second-biggest marsh – the wetland wildlife haven of Marais Poitevin – and that it’s also a speedy 60 minutes’ drive to the coast. Camping le Martin-Pecheur is set in the peaceful little village of Magné and primely plonked eight kilometres from Niort and six from Coulon, making this locale is a great spot from which to admire the lush and leafy and waterscapes of the Venise Verte and Marais Poitevin from any number of angles: from land on foot or by bike, or from the water in a boat or a canoe. Even better, this pretty place is also an easy hour’s car journey from La Rochelle and the beaches and islands that surround, so you’re well sorted for different flavoured day trips out. Guests have access to a well-equipped playground, a seasonal outdoor pool (open during July and August), a communal living room and a shop selling all your basic bits and bobs around the reception area. Pitches are spacious, level and splendidly shaded and, renovated in 2017, the sanitary block is heated and kitted out with showers and toilets.

Local attractions

The Sèvre Niortaise river lies right opposite the site for waterside wanders or bike rides, as well as sightseeing from another perspective in a canoe or by boat. As one might expect from such a soggy area, the Marais Poitevin and the Sèvre Niortaise river are an anglers’ paradise, with fab fishy specimens ranging from eels to black bass, roach, tench, bream, pike and many more up for grabs (the waters here are known to be very generous). While you’re at it, add something extra to your fishing trip and give yourself the chance to try out various traditional fishing techniques specific to marshier areas. Elsewhere, an hour’s drive away to the west, the cultural attractions of La Rochelle – such as its aquarium, natural history museum, maritime museum and the Musée des Beaux-Arts – make for a splendid day trip away… As do the coastline’s beaches and the many boat trips you can take out to the cracking islands of the Vendée and the Charente-Maritime.
