Relax by the pool (added by manager 02 Sep 2022)
Plenty of space
The thouet river, less than five minutes' walk away
Lots of greenery

  • Peaceful site five minutes' stroll from the banks of the Thouet river
  • Within an hour of vineyards, theme parks and Loire valley châteaux
  • Swimming pool, games room, bar, bistro and wine tastings
At Camping de Courte Vallée, the valley may be short, but you won’t want your stay to be… The family-friendly site is less than five minutes’ drive from the centre of Airvault, a small town in the Deux-Sèvres department of Poitou-Charentes, and is a top jumping off point for lengthy explores, beaux cháteaux and having a tipple or two. This is a pretty part of France, so don’t leave it unexplored: the Thouet river is within five minutes’ stroll of the site, so take to the water on kayaks and canoes or keep to the banks for riverside wanders with your dog. If you fancy lengthier rambles, the long-distance GR 36 walking route passes right by the site entrance. Days on site might include a slow-paced game of pétanque, some overly intense table tennis (it’s a serious sport), sloshy wine tastings and vineyard tours, and a splashy dip or leisurely float in the pool. There’s an on-site bistro to deal with any hungry times, or you can stop by at the grocery shop for supplies to get a barbecue going if you prefer to cook for yourself (don’t forget to order some fresh bread for the morning). Once you’ve worked up a thirst, toddle over to the bar for beer, wine or sobering coffee. Before you leave, be sure to venture into Airvault to try some goat's cheese – it's a local delicacy…

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: What is not to like ? A very friendly, peaceful campsite. Jayne and James work so hard to make sure that everything runs smoothly. The pitches and facilities are excellent and spotlessly clean. The food is also really good and very reasonably priced. We loved the area and we will return. 5 stars from us all round .

Disliked: Can’t think of anything !

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Very peaceful, spacious pitches, pool area, pretty village setting. James very friendly and helpful. A lovely area to stay if you have all you need with you for the duration. Very relaxed site with local amenities a short drive away.

Disliked: It's just felt unkept. The pool wasn't very clean, the toilet ceiling was filthy with insects and cobwebs, outdoor bar area in a similar state. Limited opening times for food or drinks and Janes mood was unpredictable - we couldn't tell if we were going to get told off or be welcomed and it was quite off putting

From the manager: Firstly you obviously booked via pitchup.com. When we checked your booking upon arrival we noticed that you had booked for 2 adults only but you arrived with a child. You told us that you wanted to stay a few days extra and you would settle this and the extra child payment at some stage. This payment is still outstanding. We are not sure what you mean by "unkept" as we have a team of gardeners looking after the 3.4 hectares daily. You are in the middle of rural France where the flora and fauna are rife - especially the spiders at this time of year. The pool is cleaned every morning. However, as it is an outside pool it is open to the elements and things do get blown into the pool during the day. The shower block ceiling is not filthy and again is cleaned daily, but in rural France the cobwebs appear again very quickly, same for the terrace area. The bar is open daily from 17.30 hours and food is available from 18.30 to 20.00 every day of the week. There are numerous signs around the campsite advertising this. We do not tell people off for no reason. However, we do advise people when they are breaching health and safety rules especially by the swimming pool for their safety and the safety of others.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Pitch Size fine. Arrived late just after kitchen had closed but hosts cooked some chips for us at quite a high cost. Facilities were reasonable and close to town. Great for a stop over for onward journey. We are at the restaurant on the last night which I as very nice but simple food.

Disliked: A little over priced for food and beer

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Unfortunately we cannot keep the kitchen open indefinitely and have to have publicised opening and closing times. However we did put the friers back on and as you state cooked some take away chips. The cost of living has impacted us here in France as well. We have kept our prices the same as last year to remain competitive so our cost base has increased. We have expanded the menu this year but after all we are a campsite fundamentally not a restaurant. You could have eaten in town where we know the menu would have been more basic and more expensive.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Loved the site. Was quiet with beautiful tree lined grounds. The pool was a godsend as it was very hot most days. English couple couldn’t be more friendly or accommodating. They were very relaxed and her home cooking was delicious. No shop but village shop and supermarket pretty close by. Showers were hot and cleaned regularly. Lovely shower stuff holders, lovely touch. Not much to see in Airvault but it’s very rustic, historic appeal is very charming. Need to drive places. Puy de Fuy is a must, as is Poitiers. Lake beaches nearby.

Disliked: Lots of flies, take your zappers and candles. Couldn’t fault it.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Facilities- showers and toilets kept very clean. Bar and Bistro offering a good selection with some daily specials. Walking distance to picturesque town of Airvault.

Disliked: Pitch a bit uneven for our motorhome even with levellers but more even pitches with less services available ( we wanted water and electric hookups and these are limited).

Local attractions

If castles drew you here, get set to be busy: the stunning Château d’Oiron and its contemporary art collection are 20 minutes’ drive from the site and the spectacular châteaux of the Loire Valley are within easy reach. There are lots of jewels in that particular crown, but if you can only get to a handful, Brissac, Brézé and the hulking Château d’Angers are musts within an hour and a half. Ease your way from castles to vineyards 40 minutes away at Château de Montreuil-Bellay, where you can explore the castle before nipping into the shop for tastings. Venture on to 10 kilometres of underground cellars at the Cave des Vignerons de Saumurs, then make your way to Angers for samplings of Cointreau. Kids won't get involved with these detailed discussions of grape varieties, so keep them happy at nearby theme parks and activity parks: the multimedia Futuroscope, the ever-popular Puy de Fou and the treetop adventures of Parc Aventure 79 are within about an hour, or they can talk with the animals at Vallée des Singes or Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine zoo. For some family time in the open air, make the journey to Green Venice for leafy waterways and gondola trips, or stick a little closer to base to poke around scenic Thouars and Parthenay.
