  • Spacious and peaceful site in the scenic Charente countryside
  • Five minutes’ drive from Brossac, 25 minutes from Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
  • Swimming pool, outdoor games and small library on site
There are, of course, many appealing parts of rural France, but it's safe to say that Camping Chez Sarrazin has found a particularly fine one. This scenic farm site five minutes’ drive from the village of Brossac is family-friendly, spacious and in an ever-so-pretty part of Charente. Be sure to make the most of that aesthetically-pleasing scenery hereabouts: the area is eminently walkable, and a handful of bike hire companies are within easy reach to sort two-wheeled outings. It’s also just 15 minutes from base to nature-filled strolls around the turquoise waters of the Guizengeard lakes; jaunts in July, when the sunflowers are in full bloom, come particularly highly recommended. More active stays are similarly easy to generate. It’s less than 10 minutes from base to Étang Vallier, where guests can fish, swim, water ski and play miniature golf, and 20 minutes to the Haute Saintonge circuit for go-karting and F3 racing. Back on site, the games field has volleyball, badminton, football and croquet, as well as table tennis and swings. A swimming pool is in place to cool off in, and guests can laze about on the poolside loungers with a book from the small on-site library. Peaceful days can be spent with eyes peeled for the deer and wild boar that sometimes pass through, and with ears cocked for the sounds of trains rolling past about a kilometre away. Light sleeper? Never fear, the trains don’t run during the night.

From the manager: Thank you Andy for your review. I take your comment on points about finding the place and will update the website with extra instructions on how to find the place within having to go cross country. I can also confirm that the WiFi has now been fixed following the intervention of engineers. Sorry it was not working during your visit though. Jeremie

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Absolutely everything. My favourite campsite all hols. Lovely setting and only 6 pitches so lots of space in the gorgeous swimming pool and never queuing for the toilet or showers. Friendly hosts and the Charente is a beautiful area to explore.

Disliked: My sat navigation tried to send us up a tractor track and through a field to get there (also happened to people on the pitch next door). Better instructions on how to find Chez Sarrazin would be great.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Disliked: X

Local attractions

Explores hereabouts should start with a trip into the small Charente village of Brossac, five minutes’ drive (about two kilometres) from the site – the pretty village has bars and restaurants, a small grocery shop, a butcher and a pharmacy. Artistic types might want to aim instead for painting workshops with Stuart Davies about 10 minutes away. A little further afield, days can be spent tripping around some of the region's spectacular and impressive châteaux, such as Chillac (15 minutes), Barbezieux (25 minutes), and Villebois-Lavalette and Mercerie (within 40 minutes). Prefer days out in nature? It’s a little under an hour to Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park. In addition to being a particularly pretty spot (the supremely scenic Aubeterre-sûr-Dronne is within 25 minutes), this part of France is known for its grape production – not just for wine, but for cognac too. It’s about 55 minutes to explores of distilleries including Rémy Martin and Hennessy in Cognac itself, and Courvoisier is closer at hand in Jarnac (45 minutes). More urban days are to be had at Angoulême (50 minutes), the walled Charente capital, which has shopping, museums, galleries and waterparks, and where well-timed stays will coincide with the annual Circuit des Remparts classic car race.
