Worried about winding up with a boring holiday? That won’t be a problem at Les Pilotis du Cognac, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Bourg-Charente in Poitou-Charentes – there’s piles to do (it’s funny in French…). Explore the Charentes region from Les Pilotis: take to the country roads and banks of the Charente river on foot or by bike, or get out on the water to see it all by canoe. If that sounds too active, pull up a piece of riverbank and cast out a line to see, or head to the nearby golf course (less than five minutes’ drive) to play a round. Back on site, you can get nice and relaxed: have a leisurely game of ping pong or rack up the points in pétanque before taking a dip in the heated on-site pool (open during the high season). You can also reserve the private relaxation area on for its hot tub, sauna and aromatherapy, and its library full of books and magazines... Once you start to feel that familiar gnawing in your stomach, grab some supplies in one of the supermarkets in Cognac or Jarnac (both around 10 minutes away) and either cook them in your private kitchen or fire up the barbecue. If you’d prefer to have someone else look after the meal plan, there are plenty of restaurants within 15 minutes of Les Pilotis to try.

Liked: The hosts Frank and Martine were lovely and the Frittes were great...the pool is super clean the same as all the amenities..don't be put off by the hill we don't have electric bikes but managed it ..the site is peaceful....the cycling (without an electric bike) is easy to both Cognac n Jarnac we had 4 nights and we're quite happy with our choice

Disliked: Pitches are not quite level some are better than others and some are bigger than others

Liked: A small and very well kept site, the facilities are very good and very clean. The motorhome pitches are level, large and fenced around three sides. Lovely pool, nice and warm. Franck and Martine are very good hosts and couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly. Martine’s home made jam is delicious and not to be missed. I can’t recommend this site highly enough, book ahead to avoid disappointment. We will definitely stay here again. Un petit camping très bien entretenu, les installations sont très bonnes et très propres. Les emplacements pour camping-car sont plats, grands et clôturés sur trois côtés. Belle piscine, agréable et chaleureuse. Franck et Martine sont de très bons hôtes et n'auraient pas pu être plus serviables ou amicaux. La confiture maison de Martine est délicieuse et à ne pas manquer. Je ne peux que recommander ce camping, réservez à l'avance pour éviter toute déception. Nous reviendrons certainement ici.

Liked: We had a fantastic stay at Les Pilotis du Cognac. Franck and Martine were wonderful hosts who made us feel completely at home and could not have been more helpful. The pool is great, the other facilities were immaculate and the campsite is in a brilliant location, near the river and lovely bikes rides along the river to Cognac and Jarnac. Strongly recommended.

Liked: What a little hidden gem ! We loved this site , the hosts were so welcoming. They gave us lots of ideas of places to go to ,arranged activities, pool party was great fun , collected the bread & croissants every morning.The toilets & showers were excellent .We really enjoyed our stay here .And will return next summer.

Liked: We had a great 4 night stay. Lovely helpful and friendly hosts; Frank and Martine. Excellent location for visiting Cognac and river side cycling routes to Jarnac and other villages. Peaceful as long as you don’t mind the dusk to night frog chorus ( wear earplugs and you won’t be troubled at all). Facilities clean and convenient. The lovely outdoor pool was very welcome on a hot afternoon. We went to the Cognac tour at Frapin about 35 min cycle away, which was very interesting and very very good small production cognac. WiFi excellent.

Liked: The owner - Franc and his wife were very friendly and accommodating. The swimming pool was absolutely lovely. Franc was still working on the site getting pitches ready but he checked with us before starting work for the day and waited for us to go out before he did anything noisy around us. The surrounding area was lovely with good cycle routes. We extended our stay from 3 to 6 nights. Wifi was excellent. The frog chorus in the evening was strangely very soothing ! Thank you Franc

Disliked: The facilities were really clean but I would have liked a toilet seat. The showers are private and outside which I think would be lovely in summer.

Local attractions

This is cognac country. Start with tours and tastings at Courvoisier, about five minutes’ drive from Les Pilotis du Cognac, then head in to Cognac for the same at Camus, Remy Martin, Martell, Hennessy and Cognac Meukow. While in Cognac, stick around for more than the brandy – there are plenty of museums, and the Château Royal de Cognac, Jardin Public and La Maison de la Lieutenance are must-sees, plus the scenic medieval streets are super strollable. Once you step away from the cognac of it all, there’s still plenty to do in the area around Les Pilotis. Montendre (around 50 minutes away) is a worthy visit, with its old buildings, château and lake where you can hire pedalos and canoes or laze on the beach – to see everything, make sure to call in to the tourist office for a guided tour. Stick with history with stops at the Roman ruins at Saintes, the châteaux de Dampierre-sur-Boutonne and de la Roche Courbon, and the stunningly scenic village (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) of Saint-Jean-d’Angély, or stick with the scenic at Pons and Jonzac. Kids chafing at the bit? Try a trip to the coast (roughly an hour away) or stick closer to home at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark.
