It's free, quick and easy!
- Seaside Oléron site with direct access to Boyardville beach
- A few minutes' cycle from Boyardville for Fort Boyard boat trips
- Backed by a 500-hectare forest with lots of bike paths
Off to Oléron? Oh, what a splendid idea. And oh, what an even more splendid idea to settle at Camping Les Saumonards, on the Charente-Maritime island’s eastern coast and 15 minutes’ drive from the town of Saint-Georges-d’Oléron.
If you’re seeking to fill your schedule with sand, sea, sailing and/or cycling, you’ll be all smiles at this super seaside spot. On one side, there’s direct access along a tree-lined footpath to Boyardville beach, which has a sailing school, safe shallows for the small sorts to swim and a generous two kilometres of sand giving plenty of space for beach games and sunbathers. Venture out in the other direction to pedal along quiet bike paths through the woods in search of more isolated bits of beach or heading towards village life.
Bike off to the south to get to Boyardville in around five minutes for boat trips to Fort Boyard or to sort meals at the shops and restaurants. Suffering from summer lethargy? Stay put on site, where a snack bar and ice cream stall open up in high season for easy eats. A bread service is also on site for your breakfast bits, as is an ice depot to ensure your aperitifs are suitably chilled.
It’s highly likely you’ll spend much of your time here sauntering back and forth from the sands, but when on site there’s a playground and pétanque court to provide a little low-key entertainment.

Local attractions
You’ve seen the sea, now it’s time to get stuck in, either powering yourself along on a sailing or kitesurfing outing from one of the sports centres on the beach or heading down to Boyardville, a kilometre away, to let more experienced types transport you off to Fort Boyard, the 19th-century offshore fort that may be familiar to those who’ve watched the telly programme of the same name.
Walkers and bike riders should find plenty of pathways to potter along in the forest next to the site (it stretches out over a whopping 500 hectares, after all). There’s a fishing area a few minutes’ stroll from the park and a horse riding centre 15 minutes’ drive away for folks who’d like to saddle up to sample the island’s trails.
Elsewhere around the island, perhaps consider visits to Parc Myocastor zoo (15 minutes’ drive), Le Port des Salines open-air salt museum (20 minutes) and Château d’Oléron (25 minutes), stopping off at Iléo waterpark (15 minutes) to cool off with slides and splashes on the return leg.
