Each year, the Festival de la Caille is celebrated on the last Sunday of July. During the festival, you will enjoy the grilled quails, which Maché is famous for. The Fête du Lac, meanwhile, takes place on 15 August. Both celebrations provide you with an opportunity to taste not only grilled quail, but also bacon and mogettes (baked beans), both specialities of the Vendée region. During those events, many games and entertainment are available for young and old to enjoy a pleasant afternoon. During the Fête du Lac, water-based games are held and a donkey race takes place. After a good meal, a firework show at the lake closes the day. A few minutes away from the coast, in Commequiers, the Vélo-Rail trail is an inviting option for a walk within a green, natural setting. With family or friends, go running on 10km of rails from an old railway line, and as you cross the Vie river, you will pass the old Saint Maixent-de-Vie railway station. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Vie river valley, the Château d'Apremont was originally a medieval fortress. The village was built around the castle by those seeking protection and security. The first building built on a polygonal plan, there are only a few towers. The main entrance is flanked by two towers, in which you enter the courtyard of the castle and the medieval garden where you can enjoy spending time. The Apremont lake offers a multitude of water-based activities. Come enjoy the lake and hire electric motor boats, kayaks, pedalos or rowboats. With family or friends, you will spend pleasant moments of relaxation here. You can spend the day on the lake as there are picnic areas located by the beach. Waterslides (open in summer) and mini golf are also available and you can also eat and enjoy the chef's specialities at the restaurant there. The 4.2km-long Passage du Gois, is a road connecting the island of Noirmoutier to Beauvoir-sur-Mer at low tide. Please prepare your visit well and cross safely: tide times and weather instructions can be found on the information boards set up on both sides of passage. The Puy du Fou medieval theme park has circus games, Viking attacks and jousting knights to plunge you into the heart of the action. With a lot of spectacular special effects, stunts and giant machinery you will laugh with your children at the water organs, dream while majestic birds fly over your heads, and feel a chill invade you during the full flamenco ballet.
