If you're the sort that gets rather grouchy after a long day of city sightseeing or elbowing others away from your beach towel (raises hand), you'll find la locale of the Vendée's Camping l'Îlot des Marais just fortuitously fab.
It's less than an hour from here from the splendid coastal city of La Rochelle and a scenic 40 minutes' drive to the sands of L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer for busy days at both… but you'll be in a peaceful rural setting for retreating back to, near the Pays de la Loire village of Le Langon and right in the middle of the magnifique Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park.
Serene waterway days including guided boat trips around the teeny canalways of the Venise Verte are close by for when you've just had enough of city and beach throngs; a fishing pond is a couple of hundred metres away, and the surrounding area is filled with walking and cycle paths to take you through the local marshes and cornfields. A swimming lake, waterside playground and leisure/amusement park are all within half an hour's drive.
l'Îlot des Marais has a pétanque court, a volleyball net and a spacious playground with trampoline, a slide and toys set among the trees. Among the amenities for guests are showers and accessible facilities, free wifi, a launderette and a washing-up area.
The site also has a small shop for basics; you can source tasty local cheese at the goat farm a short distance away.

Local attractions
Make first for the big fishing pond just across from the site for an afternoon of angling or waterside snoozing, or take the walking and cycling trail from Le Langon village around part of the local marshes.
Elsewhere, it's a drive of 30 minutes or under to several most excellent Marais Poitevin days out, and well under an hour to famed destinations like La Rochelle and the beaches of the Atlantic coast. Well worth the slightly longer drive 65 kilometres away is spectacular Puy du Fou, eclipsed only by Disneyland Paris as France's biggest theme park.
Around 25 minutes in the car will take you to the Natur'Zoo at Mervent, in the Mervent forest a short drive from Fontenay-le-Comte, where you and your beasties can see around 450 animals representing over 50 species. Within 30 minutes, reach the Marais Poitevin in Maillezais, for guided or self-guided boat and canoe trips around the marshes: a day trip hugely recommended in these parts.
