Countryside and sea? As you'll likely already have figured out when sorting previous hols, that's a proper splendid combo. The sunny Vendée's RCN La Ferme du Latois is (as you'll likely already have figured out) on a farm – in a handsome rural setting with loads of space to play, and all a niftily easy drive from spectacular Atlantic coast beaches at the likes of Bretignolles-sur-Mer, Brem-sur-Mer and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie. Two lakes for watersports are within walking distance. The central spot of this lush and spacious family-friendly site is the 19th-century stable of the former farm, now fully refurbished to make up the park's main building and recreation room. Also centrally set (and possibly more likely to entice the kids) is a fine big outdoor pool with toddlers' area and waterslides – and there's also a volleyball and football field, a playground and trampoline, table tennis, pétanque and a lively high season entertainment team... and a library, just in case all the above has left you feeling a tad faint... Food is covered from morning to night at the stable's restaurant, bar, bakery and snack bar, as well as a food shop for all the elevenses, second breakfast and afternoon snacks in between. A supermarket is three kilometres away, in Coëx.

Liked Lovely big site set in beautiful surroundings. Friendly staff and got to choose our own pitch between the two fishing lakes

Disliked Made wrong choice close to lakes and was ravaged by mosquitoes

Liked Very friendly team, lovely surroundings. Nice bar and restaurant- a bit expensive for what you get but we tend to cook for ourselves usually. Menu obviously geared to families with young children which is fair enough.

Liked The site is clean and the facilities for showering etc are very good. I've seen people complaining about them being unisex but everything is in cubicle so no issue at all. Swimming pool is great and the kids loved the slides. We had an issue with our car wheel which the reception team were amazing and also a shout out to Mike who helped us loads.

Liked Helpful friendly staff, first allocated pitch was not suitable and they made sure we got a pitch that better suited are requirements at the time. Pool area was clean and heated with good selection of depths.

Local attractions

A drive of 10 kilometres or so west will land you at the Atlantic coast and its spectacular beaches, plentiful watersports and placid pursuits such as rockpooling, sunbathing, and mussel, crab and shell foraging. The seaside town of Bretignolles-sur-Mer about 15 minutes' drive from the farm is a popular spot for all the above, as is Saint Gilles Croix de Vie a few minutes further along the coast, and Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez a couple of minutes from there. For island times, catch the ferry from Saint Gilles to sail out to the spectacular Île d'Yeu, in an artistic setting famed for its tuna and lobster fishing. The lively and popular resort of Sables d'Olonne is 35 minutes' drive away; boat trips can be arranged from here too. And if you're anywhere around this part of France, the decidedly fab theme park of Puy du Fou, just over an hour away, is a must.
