- Scenic family-friendly site on the banks of the Varenne
- Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park hiking trails from the site
- Miniature golf, fishing and snack bar; next to municipal pool
Picture the scene: feet up, locally-brewed cider in hand, nothing but green in sight and the sound of a river flowing by... how does that sound? Have the lot by heading to Camping Le Parc de Vaux, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the small Pays de la Loire town of Ambrières-les-Vallées in the department of Mayenne.
As the site's in the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park and on the banks of the Varenne, there are plenty of green and watery explores around here. Hiking trails along towpaths and the Mayenne verges leave directly from the grounds, the St Loup vélorail starts within 10 minutes for pedallers and the 615-kilometre-long Vélo Francette cycle route passes five minutes away.
There’s plenty of adventure to be had on site too – 18 holes of miniature golf to putt around on, pétanque and tennis courts for other precision ball games, a playground and climbing wall for the kids, a market every week, and a municipal swimming pool next door (free during high season) with slides for splashing times.
During high season, there’s a snack bar and takeaway on site: make your way here for fries, pizza, paninis or ice cream to get energy back post-swims. Or pick up local eats in Ambrières-les-Vallées or Mayenne... including a cheese course or two – it’s somewhat of a speciality round these parts.

Local attractions
Start stays in Ambrières-les-Vallées with a visit to the museum of the weavers (Musée des Tisserands) and a stop at Fieudière discovery farm to feed calves and meet the rabbits, chicken and goats.
For animal encounters of a different sort, claim a spot on the Varenne riverbank and cast out a line, or pile the kids into the car for a jaunt to the Refuge de l’Arche zoo and visits to its lions, tigers and bears (woohoo), a little over an hour away.
There are plenty of classic French châteaux nearby if seeing how royalty lived is your crowning joy: get slightly palindromic at Château de Lassay in Lassay-les-Châteaux and poke around the museum in Château de Mayenne, both within 15 minutes, then wander further afield for the sprawling Château de Fougères and the fab 13th-century Chateau de Bourgon.
More history can be had at the archaeological museum and old Roman city of Jublains or the Royer Josselin museum of cider – very different experiences, but both worthwhile. Otherwise, opt for climbs and explores at Vallée Grottes de Saulges, just under an hour away, or make the crossing to the spectacular island town of Mont St Michel, an hour and a half from base.
