  • Eco-friendly site a five-minute drive from Le Thoreuil, on the Loire
  • Château de Brissac 20 minutes’ drive; Saumur half an hour
  • Veg gardens, free-roaming chickens and home-made breakfasts
Wine, good food, nature walks and historic cities… sound like a good combo for your Pays de la Loire holiday? A great base to experience all those things (and more besides) is Domaine du Bois Davy, a peaceful site between Saumur (half an hour’s drive) and Angers (40 minutes), in the Loire Valley. At the nearby village of Le Thoreuil (five minutes, or a half-hour walk), you can sit at a quayside cafe and watch the Loire flow gently past… The site is part of a farm and occupies 11 green hectares of fields and forests. Amenities include a well-equipped communal kitchen and a launderette (plus, of course, a toilet block with showers and a washing-up area). Convivial owner Pascale believes in an ecological approach, which is why the site has recycling facilities, composting toilets, water-collection systems and other sustainable, low-footprint measures in place. Chicken, ducks and peacocks roam free, and the small vegetable garden and the orchard yield organic produce that finds its way into Pascale’s home-cooked breakfasts (those home-made jams – oh yeah). The site is popular with families, with lots of rooms for kids to run around; its accommodations are also pretty private, so if you want to go naturist, feel free to do so. Dogs are also welcome guests here (but please keep them on a lead to avoid close encounters with the free-range chooks).

Non-electric grass and earth pitch

Liked The unique ethos of the place was great but the current owners lack enthusiasm on facilitating camping needs. We were shown a pitch that were immediately stuck in the mud with temperamental electrical hookup and an unusable water supply. Felt stuck waiting to be helped with the tractor to be pulled out of the mud. Felt it could have been more of a priority to have been freed and they should’ve have known that my motorhome would sink in their pitch. Met some beautiful people but it is more of a permanent friends working living quarters than a facilitating campsite. The loving ethos is all very well and good but we ended up paying more than we felt we should for services that were not sufficient.
Peacocks are gorgeous just like many other aspects of it but overall give it a miss if you’re looking for decent camping facilities. And maybe if promoting compost toilets they should be emptied before reaching the seat!

Disliked Ancient electrical hook up.

Local attractions

The elegant Château de Brissac (20 minutes’ drive) is the tallest castle in France, with seven floors housing more than 200 richly decorated rooms, plus an extensive landscaped park with ancient vineyards, promenades and waterways. At Château de Montgeoffroy (also 20 minutes) you can explore aristocratic life as it was in the 18th century. You’re in the middle of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park here, which means you’ve hit the jackpot in terms of riverside walks and woodland hikes. There are also (mostly flat) cycling paths skirting the Loire or going inland, to vineyards, historic towns and prehistoric sites like the Troglodytes houses Forges (25 minutes). Stretching along the Loire, Saumur (half an hour) is dominated by a medieval castle with four distinctive limestone turrets. From here you can also join a river cruise, though you might prefer to spend the day sampling the locally produced Cabernet Francs and Chenin Blancs in the lively wine bars lining the cobbled streets in the old town.
