Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The proximity and the beautiful park across the road. Clean sanitary facilities

Disliked: Poor organisation. We weren't offered a security device to open the gate until day 2 which caused confusion. Pitches were tired and unwelcoming and only separated by a rope barrier. Our experience of the snack bar on day 1 was diabolical. It took several reminders and 45 mins to get our drinks, and 2 hours + to receive a pizza (overcooked) and 15 mins later a croque monsieur (practically raw). We were offered a free drink and thought it was emphasized it was a dry white wine preference, even pointing out the choice on the menu, I still was given a sweet one. Very poor.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Setting on an island in the river, opposite a lovely park and close to a charming village. Staff were very friendly and helpful and out pitch was good - despite some sustained rain, it did not become waterlogged. The site was clean and well maintained, especially the toilet block.

Disliked: There was no proper drinking water tap (I made one work by the washing up sinks) and no toilet cassette emptying point. It was actually suggested I take the cassette 2-300m down the road to a public motorhome service point with just a grille over a hole in the parking area. As we were there 4 nights I refused to do this and instead I tipped the cassette into one of the toilets (carefully, being very diligent in cleaning the area afterwards.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Our pitch by the river was relatively picturesque. It was cheap.

Disliked: We arrived hot and bothered after a 5 hour journey, to find that there were 300 screaming children (yes - THREE HUNDRED) on a school trip. There were up to six tents per pitch, making it resemble a festival, or possibly a refugee camp. The toilet block had 2 male and 3 female cubicles (along with a few urinals in the corner), with hordes of small children queuing/jostling for an empty toilet. To be fair, it was almost as if someone turned a switch at 10.15 pm, and they all settled down. But by then we had had enough. There is no Motorhome service point or facility to empty chemical toilets- you have to drive out of the campsite to a public Aire about half a mile away. We never discovered whether it was possible to fill up clean water tanks, and given the state of hygiene I did not feel confident to use the public Aire for that purpose. We booked (and paid for) 2 nights, but left after one.

Local attractions

Hire a bike to get out and about around this pretty setting and to ride along to the local town of Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu, just over a kilometre away. Less than half an hour's drive will land you at Planète Sauvage, the 80-hectare safari zoo park home to around a thousand beasties from 150 species. Visitors can view the animals by car in the safari park setting, or amble around on foot around the pedestrian section and the dolphinarium Marine City, the bush village with crocodiles and other scaly critters, and the jungle trail to the flamingos and monkeys. Time must be taken in spectacular Nantes too, 25 minutes' drive away, and to tuck into eel, shrimp and sardines from the local ports of La Turballe and Le Croisic.
