- A short stroll from a sandy Atlantic coast beach
- Huge programme of summer activities for kids, teens and adults
- Spectacular aquatic area with pools, slides, Jacuzzi and sundeck
Ditch the car and hit the beach from this lively family park near the Atlantic coast: Camping Les Ecureuils is a few hundred metres from golden sands and its local town of La Bernerie en Retz – and has enough to do for all ages that you could stay on site for all your summer hol should you so wish.
Even though significant time should be spent on the La Bernerie en Retz beach close by, guests of all ages will also clamour to check out the excellently-equipped and recently renovated pool area on site, which comes with a heated pool, water games, a Jacuzzi, fountains, a paddling pool, waterslides and a sundeck for your watery and basking pleasure.
You'll need to be around on site during some days and most evenings as well, to take in as much as poss of the packed entertainment programme running in July and August from morning to night. All ages can start the day with an activity or three: grownups at the Zumba, power yoga, aqua gym and (for the brave) bootcamp sessions; ages three to seven at the sessions and workshops of the kids' club, and ages eight to 12 at the team sports and games events, all running in the morning.
Sports tournaments such as beach football, volleyball and archery are arranged in the afternoons, as well as (this is France, after all), pétanque tournaments every week. And then into the evenings: peak season sees entertainment for all ages to round the day off, ranging from disco nights with themes including Hollywood and the Wild West; shows like Mamma Mia and live concerts; talent shows for all levels and size of performer, and nights of karaoke and bingo.
Camping Les Ecureuils covers five wooded and landscaped hectares, 15 minutes from Pornic, 25 from the Planète Sauvage animal park and around 50 minutes to Nantes. Leisure facilities as well as the outdoor pool area include an indoor pool, a bar and snack bar, tennis courts and a games room.

Local attractions
The beach a short stroll from Camping Les Ecureuils belongs to La Bernerie en Retz, a comely Loire-Atlantique seaside town between Pornic and Nantes. It's grown from a small fishing village to a swish Atlantic coast resort, with bars, restaurants and shops aplenty alongside its family-friendly beaches, award-winning clean waters, peaceful coves and its lake sea with safe swimming even when the tide is out. Sailing and watersports lessons are available on the lake too for sea dogs keen to hone their nautical skills.
Another excellent coastal spot is the port and shipbuilding town of Saint-Nazaire, about 35 minutes' drive north on the right bank estuary of the Loire river, on the edge of the famed Brière marshes. On the way, stop off at (or have a separate day) at Pornic, among its harbours, beaches, castles and medieval Old Town.
The couple of hundred species of the safari and marine park of Planète Sauvage live about 25 minutes' drive away at Port-Saint-Père; animal aficionados keen to see critters in the wild should venture additionally with their field guides to the Guerande salt marshes and the Brière Regional Natural Park.
